You will be ok. As you know they put you under, and boom! do their thing. you will be awake and think that it went so fast. i will say this however; if they want you to do physical therapy, please do it. It does help. i have not ever had a shoulder surgery, but did have carpal and cubital at the same time, meaning my arm was useless until it healed. It will be fine.  :)

I have just had my third op within a year. The first wqas a knee replacement. The second two both on my left shoulder. The operation itself didnt hurt due to the pain block they gave me. Take your time with the recovery, thats why i needed mine done twice....

Good luck and hugs with my good arm

You'll do just fine! I had ankle surgery...the worst part was right before...but they give you stuff to calm you down. In fact, that's the last thing I remember..."We're going to give you something to make you more comfortable..." Then, I was awake and watching TV.

Don't forget to milk it for every drop of sympathy that it's worth!!! And, big HUGS!!!!

Gosh HUGS- I have a friend that completely tore her rotator cuff- it can not be fixed. She is unable to lift her arm above her head.  All she did was slip on ice.

You have my sympathy. I am going in tomorrow for a MRI of my shoulder, supposedly a pinched nerve thats not reacting to steroids or pain meds. So hopefully soon I will find out whats going on. Good luck with your surgery, I am sure you will do just fine.

Umm- do you know that old joke about the guy who walks into the doc and says- OK doc- what's up?  The doc says you have high blood pressure and a blocked artery- I want to operate immediately!  Guy says- gee doc- I want a second opinion.  OK, says the doc- you're ugly too.

I just googled shoulder fusion surgery- and my off the cuff read is that you're 22 and they want to do this to you?  Umm, have you gotten a second opinion- or maybe a third?  Does the doc who proposed this really have good credentials- are they part of a teaching hospital for instance?  You should be able to find some good docs in St. Louis- Washington University has a pretty good med school IIRC.  Have you called their orthopod department and asked for a consult with one of the people that teach there?  I don't think I'd be in a tearing hurry to go under the knife unless you're sure that you need to- and the procedure that they're talking about sounds like it will leave you with some permanent limitations.  So unless you've done the second opinion bit, I'd be a bit hesitant.

I found out today that I get to undergo ulnar nerve relocation surgery.  This cannot even be scheduled until February.

Another 2+ months off work.  Kill me.  Now.

Wow, sorry to hear that. But you know, if people can walk after they've been told they would never again, perhaps that is something to think about. Good to see someone else mentioned the therapy afterwards.

I had both shoulders done within 3 months of each other.
It was nothing except for the right one that had a torn rotator that I had to keep in a sling for 6 weeks.
What are you afraid of, being put to sleep?

Advice--do all your Physical Therapy religiously.  I am currently recovering from a total hip replacement so i know how important that is. Also take your pain med if you feel you need it; ask all the questions you have without worrying about sounding dumb; and if you are in the hospital overnight ask for a room away from the nurse's station.

Here's your hug ((((((((((Liz))))))))), hope it goes well.

The first few days after are tough (shoulders get involved in most body movement), so it's essential to have someone help you pull up pants, put on socks, get out of bed.   Get the after-surgery pain meds BEFORE you get home and before you need them.  And, as others already said - do your physical therapy routines.  Best to you!

I've had ulnar nerve relocation surgery and rotator cuff surgery.  Both within 4 months of each other.  The operations themselves went well; did the physical therapy and now have 70% use of both arms.  Considering how much pain I was in prior to the operations and how I feel now, the surgery was worth it.

Find a good orthopedic surgeon if you don't already have one. Do the physical therapy as already suggested and figure it will take at least a year of therapy.  That was the hardest part for me.  Not just the pain of working the areas that were operated on, but the discipline necessary to keep up with it at home and at the facilities.  Many times I just wanted to quit - if I had, I probably would only have about 30% usage of my arms.

Good luck.
