I wrote my guy a letter explaining how I felt, what I thought I wanted and needed. He had always tried to be domineering within the relationship so I had a fairly good clue that he would embrace that aspect, but I had no idea whether or not he would be into the kink also, an integral part for me.
Having just watched it with Sir, I can recommend renting the video 9 1/2 weeks just as a cuddle on the couch with a saucy classic, and then at the appropriate moments say "how would you react if I did that?" or "how would you feel in her shoes?" Use conversation to explore the scenes. The kink in there is relatively mild, and the power exchange fairly gentle, but its an excellent way to start the conversation.
