I haven`t been here long enough to know if a death penalty pro/con thread happened,but I bet it has. I`m against it,for many reasons,the biggest is the fact that government is in charge of it.They fuck up enough,(on other things) for me to know that they will get that wrong too,and kill innocent people.Now in Jersey,(where I live)that`s not an issue. <winks at slaveluci>

As Owner59 pointed out, there are too many flaws, too many mistakes being made. Too many exonerations due to DNA evidence, too much money changing hands and swaying verdicts. Now, erase those mistakes, and I 100% believe in the death penalty.

Actually, they had it when it was a territory, but even then the only guy executed was someone from my home town. Michigan ditched the death penalty when it was vying for statehood. They wanted to appear as civilized as possible. Bob

Yup, many times. You know, most of the people who are in favor of "states' rights" seem to be in favor of the death penalty too. Kudos to the state of NJ, sound decision if i may say. Prison reform is what needs to be addressed next; we send people into prisons to correct their actions and 9 times out of 10 they come out more violent than previously. The entire system is flawed and now seeing the death penalty removed makes it seem as if there might be a chance to create a reformation within the complex.

Life in prison is pretty much a Death Sentence. No matter how it goes, the criminal will die sooner or later. I only support Life In Prison with no Parole vs the Death Penalty on the basis that killing is to good/kind for certain evils. A cold cell, bad food, and surprise visits from other inmates, make me think that Death is the easy way out of the punishment. When you have a choice, does anyone really want to live there life in prison? Someone, anyone, please kill me and end my miserey.

The biggest crock of shit I ever heard was when people who are opposed to the death penalty say that it's "cruel and inhumane". Do you think a murderer who stabbed someone 75 times gave a shit about the victim? No, they didn't. Why should we, as a society, care about the humanity of the condemned when that person didn't care for the humanity of the victim? I personally don't give a damn about a condemned person's civil rights. To me, all murder convictions should require the death penalty as punishment. I believe that lethal injection is too easy on the condemned. Their victims suffered a great deal, so I say reciprocate the favor. Bring back the electric chair, gas chamber, and hangings. Televise them, make the executions public and sell tickets. When someone watches a person put to death, I believe it is a great deterrence for future capital crimes. I'm not saying it will completely eliminate capital crimes, but I think it may save innocent lives down the road. Plus, it saves the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars by executing them instead of supporting them for the rest of their lives in prison. I say God bless Texas for using the death penalty as much as they do. The Texas state motto is, "If you kill someone here, we will kill you back!" The states that do have the death penalty don't use them enough, yet Texas has put in an express lane! The nation needs to stop worrying about being politically correct and pussying out to conform to every civil rights group and start setting a hard line that has severe consequences when crossed.

L&M, I'm for states rights (The Tenth Amendment I think). If N.J. wants to do that fine, I just won't go to N.J. anymore. I may have to drive through it occaisionally but I can gas up in Delaware and that would get me up to Conn. I think they should have public hangings, I want to be able to see what my taxes are paying for. And I don't think the death penalty serves as a "deterant" as some people would say but I don't think it's supposed to be either. The state calls it "justice" I call it "revenge."

Why is that?

I'd only be for getting rid of the death penalty under one scenario. We take all capital crime offenders and drop them on a remote island in the Pacific. The U.S. has lots of them that no one lives on; you know the ones where we used to test nukes. We dump them off there and tell them, "best of luck." If they can't follow the rules of society, then they can form their own society on the island. We surround the island with mines to prevent escape, and forget about the assholes. How long do you think it would be before they killed each other off? That is the only acceptable alternative to the death penalty for me.

Yes, because a vigilante system of justice is one i want implemented in my country. Texas thrives off of the idea of an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth, this is rather contrary to its (although tepid) allegiance to the Christian creed. I have little to no respect for the governing bodies in that state when innocent men have been placed on death row and been wrongfully murdered. Growing up in NC and coming under the instruction of a very well known defense attorney, i learned the case of a wrongfully accused man in the town i grew up in. He served 22 years for the rape and murder of a white woman (he was African American), 22 years and finally DNA results were what allowed him to be freed from prison. If that were taking place in Texas he would have already been fried and forgotten like a majority of the cases with no answers. i find it sad that we decide to play God/dess in this society, we have no right over O/ones ability to live life even if it is in the confines of a cell.

Why the hell should my tax dollars be used to help support the scum of society for the rest of their lives when the victims didn't get to see the rest of theirs? How about we just spank their naughty bottoms with a ruler, shake our finger at them, and say, "Shame on you."? Yeah, that'll really do the victims and their families justice. The government is far from perfect and I'm sure there are some innocent people that were executed. There needs to be a major change to the way captial punishment is handled, but for the ones who are guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt, I believe in the death penalty for murder. No questions asked. Let the punishment fit the crime. I also believe the death penalty should be used in cases of treason and terrorism.

I'm all for DNA testing. Now that we have that technology, it will go a long way in proving guilt in court. You know as well as I do that a lot of these people are clearly guilty. They have a huge amount of evidence against them, and you have to do something pretty bad to get the death penalty. They don't give it out for all murders. I don't like life imprisonment, because it gives them a chance to kill again. They can escape and murder people, they can kill other inmates that are doing time for less serious crimes, or they can kill prison staff. Do you remember those guys in Texas that busted out of jail awhile back. They murdered a police officer during a robbery of a sporting goods store. All of them were doing life sentences.

Blood sports? You know, some people think we are "declining like the Roman Empire" so why not have some Gladiator Fights with "lifers" in prison? We could train them in sword, trident and net fighting! Then we could have real matches on tv and drink beer and wear Togas! "In the left corner in the green loincloth from N.J. where they have no death penalty, Gladiator Rastithus Deuce and a Quarterus ...." Then, they fight to the death! There's a lot of unemployed or underemployed people out here because of the Global economy and millions of illegal aliens in the country working for slave wages who demand entertainment.....................wait a minute, wasn't that exactly what happened in Rome?
