One of the better rock stations in Houston recently adopted the "Jack" format. I was just curious as to any opinions on "Jack".

You forgot the option for us Sat radio owners.

M. Level-

I generally hate radio in any format after a few hours... But 'jack' I have grown to like- it's utterly random, never seems to repeat.

I am split on the DJ issue... taking the DJ out of the equation takes away one more job in the market, and allows the fatcats to get fatter. OTOH, I never met a DJ that wasn't a no-talent souless corporate media whore, so out of work DJs are kinda funny.

Mostly I don't listen to radio. The boat I live on has AM, FM, DTV and XM- I usually end up playing my ipod (or the eqivilent), and reading... When I do go to the airwaves, I look for JACKFM.

Kevin Pollak fan, Level?  [:D]

there's a Jack FM station here in Chicago however i listen to net radio more than mainstream stations

Level -> RE: Jack FM (12/15/2007 1:46:04 PM)

Lawrence, that's one thing I do like about it, as well, the not knowing what's going to be played, and for the most part, knowing that it'll be an interesting tune. And yes, a crappy DJ can be a killjoy, but the previous station had one of the exceptional ones, lady by the name of Wendy Miller.

Estring -> RE: Jack FM (12/15/2007 1:47:47 PM)

They've had "Jack" here in LA for awhile now. It is okay, except they play too much 80's synth type music.
As a Sirius subscriber, I don't really listen to regular radio for music anymore. I usually listen to the local sports or talk radio.
The music stations here in LA are pretty sad basically.

Not really, there wasn't anything satellite radio related on this I was curious about, but! I'm about to post another thread that pertains to that [8|]

Okay, you satellite and online listeners, a new thread should be up in a moment, if you'd like to check in there. [X(]

NaiveTempest -> RE: Jack FM (12/15/2007 2:10:32 PM)

Ahhhh. Ok, now that I know what it is, I have to say that my fav station is of the "Jack" variety. I LOVE it, cuz it's not the same thing over, and over and over so I don't get burnt out over a song.

windchymes -> RE: Jack FM (12/15/2007 5:11:56 PM)

I also like the Jack format a lot, since it does mix it up.  Sometimes it's a little schizophrenic to go from Rob Zombie to Build Me Up Buttercup, to Britney Spears, but you get used to it.

petdave -> RE: Jack FM (12/15/2007 5:20:03 PM)

Hm. We haven't had a Jack station yet. We've had Alice, Dave, and now Chuck, though. [8|] They've all pretty much sucked.

i don't buy the "we play music from every era" schtick... somehow, despite exponentially increasing their library in theory, in practice you still end up hearing the same damned songs three or four times a day.

I agree.  I was stuck with a rental car the past couple of weeks and condemned to drive without my XM...it was baaaad.  Jack is a great last-ditch station to resort to, but it's still last-ditch.  there are so many 80s songs that I would love to never hear again, but every once in awhile they play a few songs in a row that are fun.

Good evening, beautiful lady. What strikes me as odd about the Jack is that many of the songs, I hated when they first came out; but now, as long as I don't hear them daily, are fairly decent. Ahhh....nostalgia.....[X(]

lighthearted -> RE: Jack FM (12/15/2007 6:31:11 PM)

good evening, hunk!

oh yeah...how often can you appreciate hearing "Abracadabra" by the Greg Kihn band??? [:D]

oooh I see....we have that here in Austin, but his name is "Bob"....lol  They've been here for about two years I think.  It's nice to hear variety sometimes.   Kinda like when you've got a taste for something, but you don't know what it is....lol

SweetSarijane -> RE: Jack FM (12/15/2007 7:47:35 PM)

We've got Jack FM here in KC and I like it. Good variety. If I listen to the radio, that's where it's set to, but I usually listen to cds of my favorites mixed.

Your average radio station has a set play list of about 120 songs.  These rotate with very infrequent gems thrown in.

Jack has a set play list of about 400 songs, with slightly more infrequent gems thrown in.

Indie 103.1 in Los Angeles plays all sorts of complete oddities, I almost never hear it repeat, and I really enjoy it.

What I have found with most of them is that as their market share has decreased due to satellite radio, Ipods, etc., the amount of commercials has grown and I am spending most of my time listening to CDs.  I will be getting a new car in a few months, and I will have it installed with satellite radio so I can listen to Special-X (what I describe as All William Shatner and Texas Chainsaw Orchestra, all the time) and never hear another stupid commercial again.
