This is probably going to sound awfully stupid. When you are chatting with someone, how do other people know you are online???
Thanks for any tips.

You mean profiles?
Or posting here?
On the profiles, it tells the time you signed on last.
If it's here thats because you show online on your profile below your photo

You can be here as "invisible" and it will show you as offline

some of us have the computer on all the time and stay logged in, but we could be on the phone, sleeping, shopping, doing anything else, but it might still show us as online.

If you mean on CM, the tab "invite to chat" will be lit up if you are logged on.. On the list of users it will also say "now" in the "last on" column.

For AOL, Yahoo , MSN or any other form of IM you might have you can set it so you are invisible then they won't know, otherwise they will see you on their buddy list if you are on.

Cripes, sometimes I log into CM, go do something else, and completely forget I'm here, lol.

I’ve done that often myself. If y’all see me in the same topic for three or four hours, It might be that I’m deep in contemplation over a thread or post – but it’s more likely that I’m snoring on the couch. If it’s Sunday afternoon, I guarantee I am snoring on the couch.

I once had a potential date ,accused me of lying and being home all day, after telling her I was at work in the next county,b/c I didn`t logout at home.

Silly girl,she shot herself in the foot.Just as well,anxious and suspicious people are a real downer.

There is a stealth mode, in the privacy settings on your forum profile page. "Hide from online user list?"

I even have it in my profile that I might look to be online, but I'm not here. It's just I'm a forgetful person and I forget to log out.

I have a Google account, and if I'm online and sociable, I keep GoogleChat logged it. Now that it handles AOL screennames, too, If I'm Online, and YOU need to know, you'll know...
