Hey Level,
Regardless of the drug and abuse issues and the problems between him and Tina, anyone in the know simply can't deny or diminish Ike's contributions to the music world. It's too bad that his name has become synonymous with the things it has because, as with anyone, he was more than his bad habits. RIP, Ike................luci

I'm not sure that beating your wife over and over is a bad habit. He made a big contribution to early R n B and Rock and Roll, but I think the best lesson to learn from him is that celebrity or talent does not make you a good person. And of course he isn't the only example of that either.

Yeah. I think my point got across. I debated whether or not to use "habits" since I knew there would be at least one someone who would throw it back at me

. "Habits" or whatever word you like. My point is that there was more to him than that just as there is more to most all people than the bad things we know they've done. I'm sure throughout history many of the people who have made great contributions to art, science, literature, music, etc. have been mega bastards. But Larry Fishburne didn't star in an expose about them so it's not as well known

Michael Jackson, is an awesome talent and performer also,.....still......

I saw Turner interviewed a couple years ago.He denied everything.

I don't know one human that's a waste of life. And his contribution TO music backs me up... this is what I posted on my MySpace bulletin earlier:

I say: "Everyone has faults EVERYONE of US! Ike Turner wasn't famous because of his faults but he became known because of them perhaps a victim to his addictions. Only he and those close to him truly know. BUT he was famous because of what he did for Rock and Roll and Soul Music and he should be honored for that alone. God speed!

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rock 'n' roll pioneer Ike Turner, who rose to fame in the 1950s and became a star performing with his ex-wife Tina Turner, has died at age 76, said an official with the performer's management company.

"Ike Turner passed away this morning. He was at his home," in San Marcos, California, outside San Diego, said Scott Hanover of Thrill Entertainment.

Hanover did not have any further information about the cause of death.

Turner helped pioneer rock 'n' roll in 1951 when his band The Kings of Rhythm recorded the song "Rocket 88," a tune widely regarded as the first record in the nascent genre. The Chess Records release was credited to the band's saxophone player Jackie Brenston "and his Delta Cats."

As a guitarist and pianist, Turner played with the likes of B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon in the 1950s. He married Annie Mae Bullock in 1958, she changed her name to Tina, and they enjoyed such hits as "River Deep, Mountain High," "Proud Mary" and "Nutbush City Limits."

The pair won a Grammy in 1972 for "Proud Mary," and earlier this year Ike Turner was awarded again with the record industry's top honor for his traditional blues album, "Risin' with the Blues."

After his and Tina Turner's 1976 divorce, Ike Turner was crippled by a cocaine addiction and was widely vilified in the mid-1980s as Tina Turner mounted a huge comeback and said she had suffered abuse and humiliation at his hand.

While contemporaries such as Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Bo Diddley crossed over to white audiences, Ike Turner never made the jump and was confined to the less-lucrative R&B category.

The Turners were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.

Ty Cobb,the famous baseball player and hall of famer...one of the greatest baseball players to ever wear a uniform......was one of the most violent and horrificially brutal bastards of his day.Just ask his wife if she is still capable of speaking normally after being beaten with baseball bats.Just goes to show that some people with huge talents are also the worst people.Is it some kind of trade off?
