"Year's Best" Meteor Shower to Peak December 13-14

The Geminid meteor shower—considered by many to be the most active annual sky show—is going to be especially spectacular this year, astronomers predict.

The show gets its name from the constellation Gemini, because the meteors appear to stream from near the constellation's bright star Castor.

Unlike last year, the Geminids will be falling against a dark, moonless night.

The last time the sky was this dark during the shower was in 1996, when observers saw up to 110 meteors an hour.

Experts say the rate will be at least that high this year, with peak viewing on December 13 and 14.

Thank you Outlier

The peak for the Geminids will be 2:00 a.m. on the 14th but I read in another article that right after dusk on and around that night there should be some Geminid meteors grazing the atmosphere in some magnificently long bright arcs.

I hope it warms up some, tonights low here will be a brisk 15 degrees

Clear and cold though, is really ideal viewing.

And that link is worth clicking on for further reading, the Geminids are interesting and unique

Kool, hopefully it won't be cloudy here, so I get a chance to see it.
Thanks for the heads-up.

In case you or anyone else that is inteested doesn't know for sure, the Geminid meteors will be coming from the area in the sky where Mars is and, if you go outside right now (in most of the U.S.) and your sky is clear, if you'll look to the East North East, the bright orange/red object that you should clearly see is Mars. It will be much the same Thursday and Friday when the shower is peaking

I went out to look and can see a bright orange/red object, but it seems to be in the wrong direction; though I don’t have a compass to be sure. It’s all good though, Thurs and Fri night I will be at work, on break, around the time you previously indicated , so I won’t have the obstructions and lighting to contend with and will have a better barring on which way to look.

Thank you, again.

If you found something that's reddish orange and fairly bright, that's got to be Mars, you've found it. Clear skies to you!

lol, thank you. Not looking too good right now; freezing rain, but I've got two days of hope, right? ;)

Best wishes,

We're getting spanked with overcast/rain then rain/snow for the rest of the week...can't remember when we had a clear night for this shower.  Maybe I should take a vacation to a clearer spot....

Right, it just peaks Thursday night / Friday morning. And it's just freezing here, it got down to ten degrees last night and it's going to be another cold one tonight. I split a few extra logs for the wood stove, and it's nice to back up to right now, after being outside for a while. We already had our freezing rain for the morning commute two days ago. Polished ice with just a dab of fresh snow on top - what fun!

It snowed today and it is still cloudy. I don’t think I’m going to get to see the show. :(

That's too bad. It's cloudy here, too, and this is expected to be a great year to view them. But it's only peaking tonight - keep your eyes peeled over the next few nights if you're out and about and the skies are clear.

It's that time already, huh?  Well I need to get out my special track suit, purple death shroud, and stir up the Kool Aid.
