MissSCD -> Something to ponder! (12/7/2007 10:13:55 AM)

My slave and I were just talking politics.  We totally disagree, but lately, I have been researching a lot more on candidates.
Do you realize that for people under the age of twenty, the only Presidents they have ever known are the Bushes and the Clinton's?
George Bush Senior, 4 years.
Bill Clinton, 8 years.
George W. Bush, 8 years.
If we put another Clinton in the White House it will be 28 years, and if Jeb Bush runs that will make it 36 year reign of Clinton and Bush in the White House.
Scary Huh?

Regards, MissSCD

Well...3/5th of that string was and is scary for me.

Missy.

More likely it will be Jeb's son, George P. Bush trying to continue that dynasty. And yes it amazes me that people are so eager to be ruled by those who consider the office an inheritance.

do you realize that those same people were also never reallly taught the constitution?

New is rediscovered old. Dynasty is a way to go. Just make it official and lot of campaign money will be saved.

Todays 1st grader- in his/her lifetime; has never known peace.

CuriousLord -> RE: Something to ponder! (12/18/2007 2:35:08 PM)

I'm not entirely sure if today's first grader cares about what's happening in Iraq.

I was in the first grade (or about there?) around the first Iraqi war.  All I can remember thinking of it is that the videos of the stealth bombers bombing things in the dark looked cool.. probably one of my early motivations to get into science.

havent we been in a state of war since ww2?  undeclared or otherwise?

Estring -> RE: Something to ponder! (12/18/2007 11:43:06 PM)

And most people under twenty probably don't even know that.[;)]

Now that is just sad.  I was called up for active duty in that war.  Yep, I was in Iraq...
thanks for making me feel old...hehe

The last day of "Peace on Earth" was sometime before the WW I if you can believe a fairly well researched doctorate thesis I stumbled on in College.
Somewhere in the world there has been one war or violent revolution going on somewhere on this planet since then.
Of course the paper contended that likely the last day was long before that maybe even as far back as the American Civil War but the research was confined to the period since WW I.

While the Korean War was never voted on by congress, Truman sent troops into Korea under mandate by the United Nations in 1950.  Today, we still have U.S. Marines stationed at the border between North and South Korea and while an active war isn't being fought, no peace treaty has ever been signed between the US and North Korea.

I remember being at one of Clinton's early campaigns.  Does it matter that I was 10?
I certainly remember the gulf war, and Bush senior's reign-- I'm also aware that he was Reagan's VP.

I will agree that many people under 20 have no interest in politics or history. Those that do are usually put off by the seemingly endless corruption and lies of our "public servants".

There is an excellent cure for this ennui.... education!  Unbiased information is hard to find, but worth the search.  http://www.vote-smart.org/  is a good place to start, to get the basics of how your candidate has voted in the past, what their platforms and beliefs are, etc.

I'm very surprised to find myself liking Ron Paul.  He's a true conservative, (I'm always thought of myself as a radical liberal! :) But wow, what a solid guy.  I really hope he's for real... would be nice if he could get rid of the IRS and return US currency to the gold standard.

This is true, I know a number or career Army Rangers...81st Airborne and all that stuff.  They pretty much get sent all over the world on a pretty regular basis to put out this flame or that flame.
Lost a couple good friends to the cause over the years as well.
