Correction about the quote i cited. The original quote, which has been adapted by many others over the years, including Calvin Calverley, is "He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches." by George Bernard Shaw, from his play, Man and Superman, (1903) "Maxims for Revolutionists".

Another quote from the same play which i think is very applicable to this thread is, "Activity is the only road to knowledge."

i also like, "Spoon feeding in the long run teaches us nothing but the shape of the spoon." by, E.M. Forster

Again, I have never been effectively educated by someone that did not have experience at that which they instructed me about... whether it be art, math, English, or ethnographic work. I have had professors that had no real life experience in what they taught... and believe me, one can tell the difference between someone who conveys ideas based upon their experience, and those who teach out of books....

I've honestly never believed in the saying "Those who can not do, teach". My teachers have usually had a drive other than to do whatever it was that they taught - they had a drive to teach others their passion and impart knowledge. I doubt we would ever consider applying the phrase to someone teaching in BDSM circles.
