SeeksOnlyOne -> quitting smoking (12/3/2007 2:13:44 PM)

well, i have set the date.....dec 24th.......

i quit once(ok i paused for 5 years), cold turkey, and shame on me for starting back.....now, when i have attempted to quit i have been sleepy as hell, grouchy as hell, had headaches, panic attacks, and many more wonderful things happening in my mind and body....

so, care to share your success stories? horror stories? stories of failure?  good drugs?

i chose the 24th cause i will be off work until the 8th of january, and i can be a hermit and sleep all the time if i have to........ugh.....3 weeks away.....

but im determined this time....i think.....hahahahaha

Lumus -> RE: quitting smoking (12/3/2007 2:17:15 PM)

My best advice falls under the following categories:

Find a dark hole where no one else is to avoid committing murder, and sweat it out.

Bear in mind that for every year you smoke, the mental cravings will last approximately one month [or more].

Use aids as necessary - lean on friends, consider things like the patches, shots, pills, and/or gum [but please, consult a physician first!].

And best of luck.

SugarMyChurro -> RE: quitting smoking (12/3/2007 2:24:19 PM)

Just quit. Stop making a big deal of it. Do it and be done with it.

In the end you just have to power through it. But others have done it so you can too.

GoddessMine -> RE: quitting smoking (12/3/2007 2:28:00 PM)

Don't quit. It's sexy.

LaTigresse -> RE: quitting smoking (12/3/2007 2:30:53 PM)

My success story. I just quite, cold turkey, end, done, no more.

What helped, bubblegum and Werthers Originals(which I can no longer stand the sight of) The bubblegum drove my co-workers crazy but I didn't like the bitches so ef them.

What to watch out for? Substituting. Avoid drinking or eating more to compensate. My first night out partying was rough. I made the mistake of not watching my alchohol intake and ended up fertilizing the shrubbery outside the country club. Not cool at all.

That was over 15 years ago and I am the nastiest anti-smoker you will ever run across. Hate em, they stink, don't want it anywhere near me. Cannot stand the smell of it on a person or objects. I cannot believe I walked around smelling that awful.

Mercnbeth -> RE: quitting smoking (12/3/2007 2:34:25 PM)

It's easy to quit - beth's done it at least 5 or 6 times since I met her!

Yeah, yeah, I know - A 'twue' Master would be able to order their slave to quit. However, this 'Master' entered into this relationship not wanting to change anything about her - including her smoking addiction.

Good luck to you Seeks! My best thoughts for successfully obtaining your goal!

GoddessDustyGold -> RE: quitting smoking (12/3/2007 2:53:01 PM)

I'm a smoker, quit twice and went back to it.  The second time after over 4 years.  It was stupid, and if I quit again I will only hope that I can be smart enough to know that I am not the type who can "just have one".
That said...what I am doing at this point (without any firm intent to completely quit) is creating situations wherein  I do not smoke. And it has cut Me down a lot!
No smoking in the house is a biggie.  It is not convenient to just light up.  I have to think about it, find the cigarettes and go outside.  For now, put your cigarettes away somewhere.  If they are not in easy reach, you will not light up so automatically.
Not smoking immediately after eating.  That is a big habit and a time when most smokers really feel the desire to light up.  I wait.  At first I had to time Myself, but now I seldom even think about it.  It just isn't an immediate reaction after a meal.  If you have to, go brush your teeth and use mouthwash.  It is a way to delay.  Also don't light up first thing when waking and don't smoke right before going to bed.  Use delay tactics to expand the length of time you are going without a cigarette.
No cigarette case or lighter.  A pack and a book of matches.  There is nothing glamorous about it, so lose the trappings, if you have any.
No smoking in the car.
No smoking on the phone.

Look for things that are automatic triggers for you to light up and start trying to eliminate or lessen some of them in the next three weeks.  When you hit your day, it might be a little easier because you already started the process of quitting.
Keep in mind that you really want to quit and then do it a day at a time, an hour at a time, even a minute at a time if you have to.  Breathe deep and blow out to empty your lungs.  A desire to smoke will pass in a few seconds if you allow it to pass.
Good luck!

Is it worth checking out Nicotine Anonymous so you don't have to go it alone?

SeeksOnlyOne -> RE: quitting smoking (12/3/2007 3:29:56 PM)

pinksugarsub -> RE: quitting smoking (12/3/2007 3:31:11 PM)

Seeks, i want to quit too; badly.  So many failed attempts this summer have left me believing that i really have no option apart from cold turkey.  i think i'll join You but on the 25th; after i've seen my family......when i really need a drink, not just a smoke.  So W/we can keep E/each O/other company if'n You want.

subfever -> RE: quitting smoking (12/3/2007 3:59:30 PM)

I was a heavy smoker who had tried several times to quit with no success. Then I got myself hypnotized. It worked like magic, and I haven't had a cigarette since. It's been over 30 years now.

Seems to me that it might be easier to wait until January 2nd to quit, after all the holiday partying is behind you.

ManyMoodz -> RE: quitting smoking (12/3/2007 4:05:56 PM)

wait until you've been told. *it's cancer*   cause most likely from smoking.
and yes, this is personal, a good friend was diagnosed 3 mos ago with cancer...They ain't called cancer sticks for nothing.....

Zensee -> RE: quitting smoking (12/3/2007 4:31:27 PM)

If you back-slide and have a puff, don't give up! It's not a total failure, just a moment's weakness. It is no excuse to chuck your effort and revert to a 3 pack a day habit.

Just say to yourself, "I went ___ (days, weeks, months...) without a smoke. I can go at least twice as long this time".

hell been there done that.....had mom at home hospice as she died from it.....and lit her cigs for her til she went comatose.....

yeah its nuts......but the reason i quit for those 5 years was to try to get her to quit.......when she first got diagnosed with lung cancer i refused to buy cigs for her when i did her shopping......then i finally gave up and said wtf-you already have lung cancer-wtf more harm can it do......

she had 3 great years after the diagnosis-with no treatments....but i dont wanna put my kid thru that if i can help it.....

the grip this addiction has on me really pisses me off.....so im getting angry at it......hopefully being pissed is the ticket to success-lol-time will tell

DesertRat -> RE: quitting smoking (12/3/2007 5:12:32 PM)

~fr~

Try this: First, have a doctor take out one of your kidneys. Then have him get in your face and tell you you're GONNA FUCKING DIE if you don't quit. Worked for me. Oh yeah...and that pill, Chantix helped alot, too.

popeye1250 -> RE: quitting smoking (12/3/2007 5:28:42 PM)

When I quit I smoke or just chew on cigars.
It really takes the "edge" off and I don't inhale them.
And I smoke the nice ones, "Macanudos."
After two months of ,.....lol, "not inhaling" (thankyou Bill Clinton) you're home free and it didn't feel like you were dragging your fingernails down a chalkboard.
Oh, and they say that people who go out and take a walk when they get the heebie jeebies for a butt are more successful too.

Sanity -> RE: quitting smoking (12/3/2007 5:54:40 PM)

I've been addicted to nicotine since before I was even conceived, but I never managed to finally quit until last January when I caught a really bad flu, making them taste like crap anyway. After the flu was gone I didn't have any real serious cravings for the first two months and then after that, all I thought about was having a cigarette for aproximately five months. Then, it was smooth sailing!

The trick for me was realizing that I had the power to resist until I took that first drag because I've proven to myself time and time again that that first one is the hook, and I cannot stop afterward.

So I don't do it, no matter what. One drag, to me, means smoking for the rest of my life, and I don't want that.

GoddessDustyGold -> RE: quitting smoking (12/3/2007 8:50:31 PM)

Yes, it's a crappy way to quit, but it's how I did it the last time I gave them up for over 4 years.  I was in the hospital for 6 days with a bad pneumonia, and when I got home I realized I hadn't smoked in almost a week.  I had already been very mentally ready to quit before the illness so I took advantage of it and kept reinforcing Myself with pats on the back as I reached goals...no smoking for a week, a month, 3 months, etc.  It is not, however, the way I recommend quitting!  [:'(]
I am really sorry I ever started again, and I am heading towards quitting, but I know I am not psychologically ready, so I won't put the pressure on Myself.
I was also never one of those "ex-smokers" and had no problems being around friends who smoked, etc.  It just really didn't bother Me one way or the other.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: quitting smoking (12/3/2007 8:50:55 PM)

If you were gambling with your life, would you want the best chance to live or the worst? Cold turkey has the lowest percentage chance of success. It matters not how much willpower a person has, and the research proves that. Each person needs to develop a system for themselves, because it is basically you fighting you. From the link I am going to provide, some of the things that helped me were, listing every morning, writing it out every day, all the bad things about smoking, and all the good things about quitting. These things should be specific to you. Tell all your friends, especially your smoking friends, that you are quitting. have you smoking friends promise to not give in and give you a cigarette. The day you quit, change all your normal habits, brush your teeth starting in a different spot, and with a different hand, shave your legs starting in a different spot, sit in a different spot to drink your coffee, take a different route to work, stay away from all physical areas that you used to smoke at. The most important thing is to click on this link and read, as well as find other links http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_13X_Guide_for_Quitting_Smoking.asp

The other important thing is to ignore everyone that says to quit cold turkey because that is how they did it.

Live well and best of luck,
Orion

CuriousLord -> RE: quitting smoking (12/3/2007 8:58:17 PM)

Get someone, like me, who has a decent sense of smell and can't stand the horrible stench that comes from smoking, to rant to you for hours about how disgusting it is.

You'll never smoke again.  :P
