I don't believe in having government agents micromanage what people choose to drive. Some people need SUVs for their work or for where they live, or any number of reasons. It isn't your place to choose what someone else drives.

I wasn’t really talking about bio fuel more about hydrogen, petrol/electric hybrid etc. It is also not just about the fuel but also the thing you drive to work, there is no sense in an SUV when you can drive something that burns less fuel and does the same job. It is just so hard to justify such waste and I don’t know why people are happy doing it. My grandparents don’t have to worry about freezing in winter because they are all dead.

I’ll also be dead before any of this matters but I was thinking about what people will inherit, not myself.

I'll just add that there is no reason for SUVs (which I love) to NOT get excellent gas mileage.

Or we could just use the resources Alaska has to offer that we already own, with very little impact on the enviroment and be done with importing oil. But that would make too much sense!

"be done with importing oil"

For about a year(worst case) to five years(best case).

After that,we`d still be in the same shit hole.

There are was to become energy independent, and still have the lifestyle we want, with cars, bikes, boats, planes, jets, etc.

This problem won`t go away, and will most likely get worse, unless we "get to get`n" and do something about this.

It's exactly my place when what people drive affects the world the younger generations of my family will inherit. If you tax fuel more effectively it doesn't take much micromanagement either. I'm all for the congestion charging in London as well; before you had stupid selfish people driving down the road to the shops.

So I'm saying yes you can drive what you want but taxation should penalise you for bad choices. Granted that some use SUV's for work but there is such a thing as a tax break for companies and individuals in those cases.

That is why taxation on fuel and how much you drive is the fairest approach because it takes into account fuel efficiency.

Many people live in rural areas and they have to drive to live - your driving tax would destroy them. So would you send troops out to round those people up, and force them to live in large cities? Or just force them to move with your beloved taxes...

And say you succeed in changing society however your whims please you - no one will be out in the country raising food any more, so then even more people will go hungry.

So be careful what you ask for!

You don't know what my driving tax is and you don't know how I'm going to apply it across different areas so how do you know it is going to kill them. I'm not against legitimate use but be honest and look around and tell me that people are driving the types of vehicles that are appropriate to their needs everywhere you see.

This isn't a case of 'it's not broken so that not fix it' because it's broken.

What are you asking for then. A vast army of bureaucrats, issuing permits for each tank of gas? Who would I have to bribe if I want to drive to the mountains, for the weekend.

I’m asking for a more realistic percentage taxation on gas than you currently have. I’m saying one tariff doesn’t have to be applied in every area. There are no extra bureaucrats because it is dealt with at the point of supply. If you want to bribe people then that can be dealt with under existing laws you no doubt already have.

So each gas station would have someone from the government telling them exactly what to charge, and what the governments take would be.

Sounds like a scene from "The Godfather"

"vast army of bureaucrats"

That`s ten times better than a vast army of our GI`s ,dying to keep oil cheap. How much does that cost?

Not work`n out though,is it?

BTW,I don`t buy the "spreading freedom in Iraq, bullshit".That`s a ruse to cover our oil policy.

Don’t try and pretend government officials don’t currently go around checking the prices to ensure there is fair competition between suppliers. So these existing government officials just have new roles, big deal.

How on earth do we manage it in Europe you make it sound so hard and complex we must be geniuses.

They have that now as a matter of fact.  Had it for many, many years.
For the express purpose of belaying devastating price wars.

Your tax plan is very complicated, and the United States is obviously much larger and has a far greater population that you realize. Your master plan for micromanaging every individual Americans' gasoline useage would take a hell of a lot more Gestapo agents than you think! And I'm not sure that I buy your assertion that every European is currently being micromanaged that way, to begin with.

Federal taxes are uniform by law.  It explicitly requires that in the Constitution.  States have the right (as do localities) to impose extra taxes above the feds, and most do.  This in no way connects to taxes based on need and valid use of the gasoline.
