Sanity -> Riots Point to Racially Divided France (11/30/2007 5:42:35 PM)

VILLIERS-LE-BEL, France (AP) - French officials point to a host of causes—poverty, unemployment, the influence of criminal gangs—for riots that erupted this week.

But there's one taboo issue that officially colorblind France has been unable to confront: race.

The violence, like riots that spread nationwide for three weeks in exposed how parts of France have divided along color lines, with blacks and Arabs trapped in the most disadvantaged neighborhoods—like Villiers-le-Bel, in the northern suburbs of Paris, where gangs attacked police and burned cars and buildings this week.

"Among the rioters, the very large majority come from immigrant backgrounds," said Douhane Mohamed, a police commander. "Why? We mustn't kid ourselves: there is a direct link between urban violence and ghettos, and the majority of people with immigrant roots live in ghettos."

The true of it is racism, just like many other -isms, is not just a problem in america, but world wide. Maybe one day things will change. And maybe one day greed will disappear. Wonder which will occur first? One step forward, two back?

It's economic, not racial.  Those immigrants are generally from countries that once were French colonies.  They come there looking for a better life, and they find huge unemployment instead.  All of this unemployment is rooted in France's 35 hour work week, lengthy vacation times, and huge welfare system.  The native French just shove these people into public housing and pretend there isn't a problem.  The leftists in that country have the nerve to call Sarkozy a fascist just because he wasnts to fix the mess that France is in.

But France is an enlightened old country that knows how to deal with Arabs, they say so all the time.

There's some truth in there, but in other areas you're wide of the mark.

To illustrate the point, the French and British economies are of a similar standard (using GDP as a measure). France has issues with poverty, crime and race relations, but are you seriously considering that the United States doesn't have the same issues? Let's have a genuine, unbiased discussion, here, and not allow the propagandists to spew the same old bollocks that France is this, that and the other, and the United States could not possibly have the same issues.

In England, the best teachers teach in the best schools, thus perpetuating the cycle of unequal access to opportunity; in France, this is not the case, which is great, some of the best teachers teach in the most deprived areas. So, you have some of these Muslim lads and lasses coming out of school with a decent education; 'problem in France is that some employers see a Muslim name on a CV and it goes straight in the bin. These lads and lasses are politically aware, and not happy with their lot.

The leftists in that country have the nerve to call Sarkozy a fascist just because he wasnts to fix the mess that France
is in.

The problem the French have with Sarkozy is nothing to do with accusations of fascism; the issue is that he is attempting to change French culture in one big fell swoop. France is a nation which prides itself on national unity, they see Sarkozy as a threat to that by directing the climate towards the individuality of Anglo-Saxon societies.

As said, it is debatable whether or not France is in any more of a mess than England or the United States. What you're seeing is the deep rooted French desire for self-expression; in England, we rarely riot over political issues, we're a fairly sedate lot, I'll guess it's the same in the United States. The French are an altogether different fish: they'll get out on the streets and express themselves. These lads and lasses are behaving in a very French manner.

All of this unemployment is rooted in France's 35 hour work week, lengthy vacation times, and huge welfare system.

Considering today's global economy, you have a point, and they're fighting a losing battle in the face of the corporate machine, but take a moment to reflect on the fact that the French are resisting, while the English and Americans are falling into line like obedient lads and lasses.

I have never made one derogatory comment about the French.  I have always reminded my fellow countrymen of the historical links we have with the French here in the States.  Yes the U.S. has problems with crime and poverty.  But we have jobs avaliable for those that want to work.  I am not foolish enough to believe that there aren't employers who refuse to hire minorities here.  But they are few and far between, because we need workers.  The French have always had high unemployment rates, and it is directly rooted in their work ethic.  Their culture is changing whether they like it or not.  That is what happens when you have immigrants from all corners of the globe enter your country.  It's going to get worse, because all Western countries are not producing enough offspring to fullfill future work demands.  The West and Japan are all becoming nations filled with senior citizens, because it is a historical truth that successful people don't breed as much.  The French can't continue having 35 hour work weeks if they want to attract business to fullfill their need for jobs.  They have two choices; change their culture or halt immigration.  I understand their unwillingness to let go.  But times change, and sometimes they change quickly.

There is something of a phenomena here that I have observed over the years. When Arabic people move into a Western culture on small scales they generally settle down well and assimilate to within the limits of their faith. But when they move into Western cultures in large enough numbers to form Arabic enclaves within that Western society then suddenly there is disunity and racial unrest and no attempt to assimilate. It doesn't seem to be a matter of persecution as much as a choice to set apart as a group. Can anyone of Muslim faith explain to me why this should be?

And yes I realize the same has occurred with other immigrate groups in the past, many times here in the US, but in time that seems to be self-correcting with all except Arabic groups who generally seem to be unwilling to assimilate in numbers over the long term.

Does anyone know what a "No Go Zone" is? The divide is caused on both sides.

The whole thing is explained by the work ethic of the immigrants, compared to the natives.

Immigrants dont want part time jobs, like the natives have.

Just because the economics are a major part of it, doesn't make it 'not racial'

Sure it's racial. Go to Europe or Russia or anyplace dealing with immigrant muslims and you will find out very quickly that race is a big part of it.
