"Its ability to establish a presence throughout the country is now proven beyond doubt," it said. "The insurgency now controls vast swaths of unchallenged territory including rural areas, some district centers, and important road arteries."

Have a friend that got word last week that his brother is coming home from Afghanistan, minus a leg. His brother, a very loyal soldier, will not bad mouth the admin or military, but he did say in a letter " more resources are needed if we are going to secure that country, so that it can rebuild. Unfortunately it does not have the strategic resources of other countries that the Pentagon has allocated assets to".

Basically, we started something there, never mopped up what we started, and now it is an uphill battle to try and get back to where they were four years ago.

Hehehehehe.  Now that's funny.  That place has never been "mopped up."  Ask the British, or the Russians.  Our mistake was ever using ground troops beyond SF to begin with.  Not destroying the poppy fields was pretty dumb too, once we were there.

I'll argue long and hard that Iraq is not something we can leave yet, but I think we needed to be out of Afghanistan a long time ago.  It's where empires go to die.

You`re confusing an all out war on Afghanistan(and it`s people),with our going after the Taliban, and the perps of 9/11.

We`re not trying to take over the country.Far from it.

Yeah, we're TRYING to reach a political and socio-economic solution while we use military actions to gain time for the diplomatic efforts.

Aren't we?

I guess I`m to the right of you,Farg,on this one.

I don`t think Afghanistan and Iraq compare.

I believe in the Afghan mission and NATO`s roll, there.

We just need some real leadership.

The Soviets spent 8 years in that country and never got anywhere... Of course the insurgency back then was being supplied by the USA. But still, it is a very difficult place to fight a war.

There are some who credit Reagan, for bringing down the USSR.That`s a myth.

The Afghan war, is what broke them.

Its a number of things that brought the Soviets down, Afghanistan was one. But Chernobyl was another. In fact they had to take thousands of troops from the front lines in Afghanistan to help clean up the fallout in Ukraine. Another was massive amounts of corruption. And the KGB actually played a role by guiding the elite towards reforms that weakened the communist party's monopoly. Gorbachev, Yeltsin, and Putin were all very closely connected to the KGB.

Eradicating opium poppies has been a key pillar of U.S. policy in Afghanistan since 2004, said Doug Wankel, director of the U.S. Counter-Narcotics Task Force in Afghanistan. Yet today, Afghanistan produces roughly 93 percent of the world's illicit opium, according to the UNODC report, and the Taliban are making inroads in remote areas of the country thanks, in part, to proceeds from the drug trade.

Hilarious!

I'd like to put my Social Security account into Oil and Defense stocks, or some commercial property near the Mojave Spaceport, but the durn libs won't let me.

Im not even counting on ever seeing my social security money. That whole system will start going bankrupt by 2015 and the Democrats are refusing to consider any type of reform. So it's just going to sink away...

Thank you for saying this - it bears repeating.

If NATO had stayed, in force, and the Shrub hadn't gone off on his Daddy's vendetta in Iraq, we could have an effective military, police, infrastructure and social bulwark against the foreign insurgents using Afghanistan as their base. Might have taken a generation or two to complete the job but the shooting war there would have been long over by now.
