Yep. What about all those things you didn't have time for when you were working? Were there things like going to a museum, or seeing movies that you put off because of a time crunch? How about a hobbie you've had interest in like cooking? The 'holiday season' just popped up on the calendar & there are loads of things you can do. Fun things like making stuff, good feeling inside things like volunteering somewhere or doing something to help kids. If you stay at home you will drive yourself nuts especially since you don't need to do anymore cleaning lol.

Read a few books, take up a new hobby, volunteer somewhere it will keep you busy and you can list it on your resume, it might even lead to a job.    Check with the temp angency - there are probably a load of openings due to the holidays.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: How do You just do "nothing"??? (11/26/2007 6:01:07 PM)

One thing I do is force myself to spend all day in my jammies, mostly in bed with the tv, paper and some magazines.  Phone off.

But frankly collarme IS relaxation for me, so if I have that, I'm good :)

Don't just watch tv; do needlework, knitting, etc., alongside it.  This should be enough to absorb your full attention for short spans.  Just don't strain your eyes.

Make getting a new job,a f/t job.

Spend 5 or 6 hours a day doing something to advance just that.

When I was off work after my surgery, I did a lot of reading.  Have friends recommend books.
See a few movies you hadnt had a chance to catch before.
If you have that inclination, write, or create something artistic.
Learn to cook something new.
Collect recipes off the web for things you like
And once i was back up and mobile, but not back to work I managed to get out a bit.  If you have a digital camera, go play tourist. Take pictures, just for the sake of taking pictures.
Thers a host of things to do, ones that if you had too much to do, would relax you.

Kalista, how about a hobby?
Bank Robbery can be very exciting and lucrative too!

FangsNfeet -> RE: How do You just do "nothing"??? (11/26/2007 7:12:05 PM)

Geeze people, am I the only one with simple solutions to such a complex problem?

Kalista07, I have just the thing for you. Swing by a liquor store. Buy a bottle of Celtic Crossing and some 7 up. Get a cup and fill 3/4 with ice. Poor in 3 oz of Celtic and 5 oz of 7up. Drink and you'll be relaxed before you know it.

My good friends Jack, Capt Morgan, and Jose always help me relax during "Down Time." Have them swing by and pay you a visit.

Do a lot of something you enjoy, and would like to better at.  Cook something new at least 3 times a week, and make something completely from scratch that has to simmer all day, at least once a week.  Grab the Thomas Guide and only go to places on routes you've never taken before.  Get up at dawn, watch the world rise into the day around you, and then go back to bed because you can.

Alcohol or drugs would also be options.

bipolarber -> RE: How do You just do "nothing"??? (11/26/2007 8:17:19 PM)

Whenever I'm out of work (and I agree, it's really boring) I split the day up by first going through the paper classifieds, checking online job sites, making a few cold calls, and writing/rewriting introduction letters to go with my resume. By noon, I will have applied to at least 2 to 3 jobs... per day... either in person, or via mail/online...no matter how long it takes. Once that's done, I usually spend about an hour doing things around the house... picking up, vaccuuming, dishes, whatever. Then, I almost always have the bulk of the day to spend as I like. I tend to focus on stuff I can do that doesn't cost any money: going to the library, (picking out books, music and DVDs there that will keep me occupied.) Or I'll spend time writing pornography (but that's just me) on my computer. Once friends are off work, I'll go bother them, watch TV, go drinking, playing pool...

The main thing is: don't let yourself become stagnant, or depressed. You need to maintian a certain inertia to your days, otherwise you end up lying on the couch, munching cheese curls, drinking far too many Mtn Dews, and watching "Passions" and reruns of "Buffy" on FX.... not a pretty sight!

Go ride a bicycle to places you have never explored before. It is low cost, good exercise, gets you out of the house, and can burn up a day before you know it.

Read.. volunteer {plenty of places hospitals, aninal shelters, etc are always in need to volunteers}.. make food for the rest of the winter and freeze it.. learn to crochet or knit and make baby blankets for the local women's shelter.. start writing your memoirs.. discover a new hobby..  write letters to everyone who has ever pissed you off them burn them {the letters, NOT the people who pissed you off}.. jump start a workout by walking around the mall 3 or 4 times during the buisest part of the day.. you can always check out www.bored.com  its always good for a laugh

About once a decade, I have this opportunity, and I love it. If it were not for this current opportunity to do absolutely nothing (except whatever I feel like doing), I would have never found this site to fulfill certain curiosities, read interesting forum posts, and meet a variety of people. In the meantime, I too have filled out hundreds of online applications, submitted hundreds of resumes, and maybe an equal amount of cover letters.I have recently had a very promising interview, so the effort is finally paying off. I myself am not used to being unemployed, but given the opportunity- I have learned how to relax, enjoy my family and friends, and have a good time until I'm so busy again, I'll probably only get to visit this site once a week.

while volunteering and pursuing hobbies are all worthwhile endeavors, they really aren't "doing nothing" or "relaxing".  it has been this slave's experience that those activities can wear you out just as much as a marathon and would also add that meditation is the ultimate "doing nothing".

this slave would suggest starting out with some simple meditation exercises...they encourage physical inactivity and the emptying of the mind, starting out small and working your way towards filling more time with "nothing".

http://www.how-to-meditate.org/index.htm

quote:

Meditating is actually easier than you might imagine. Most of us have dabbled in meditation by participating in conscious relaxation. Maybe during an exercise class or to manage pain at the dentist or anxiety before a test. We start by paying attention to our breathing. The practical effort to focus completely on our breathing takes our minds away from the "mind clutter" that constantly tries to invade our mind and eliminate feelings that will lead to a time of calm. With repeated effort the goal of clearing your mind – to think of nothing, does occur and the process of meditation takes on its own energy.

I empathize, Kali, just lost my job a month ago (nice, downsized before the holidays with only 2 months severance).

So, I get your question. Job hunting today is mostly done online, so you can only spend so many hours per day seeking. I send out resumes and coverletters as much as possible in the morning and then throughout the day if I am home.

But now, there are not that many job listings in my field during this time of year.

So, what else do you do? Aside from hanging out on collarchat, I do try to do some constructive things, started a little side business to make some extra money, but that is done on weekends.

Cannot go shopping, that would entail spending money, no one particular boyfriend at the moment [:(], friends all work during the day. So, I go for walks, talk on the phone, read a lot, get my nails done, have an orgasm, keep looking for jobs, go to a movie, listen to music, look into volunteering (just started doing so), etc.

One day at a time...
