I keep getting email talking about "heavy tops" or "heavy bottoms"  but I'm not entirely sure what people mean by it.  I'm thinking it's one of those relative terms, so I'll toss it out here.  What do you think makes someone "heavy"?

I have always associated the word with one who plays very heavilly; whether it was a top or bottom.

Same here, always heard it as one who plays heavily and takes or gives a lot in play.

I'm thinking its not referring to weight, but rather intensity of play

mmmmmmm well... I think someone over 200lbs is pretty heavy.

I consider a heavy player to be one that does not mind marks, that can take play for longer periods of time, and probably sees him/herself as a masochist or pain slut.

Ah, if someone told me that they were "a heavy [something]", I would take it to mean they they're overweight.  But I could see the "heavily into [something]" definition, too, just wouldn't be what I'd think.

Label all you want.  Just remember that one man's heavy will be another man's light and another man's hardcore.

Katy i totally agree .. just as ones perception may not be anothers .I have been told  i am a "heavy player " yet when i am in a dungeon space next to what i view as a pain slut  that lable does not seem to stick so well . lol
Then again most of the lables dont adhere too well to me .

Well, as a heavy bottom (as described by others who know me and have seen me scene), I have to say that the ones who are dubbed "heavy" are probably given that descriptive by people who are seeing the things that the person is doing, and find that it is a harder play than what they are doing or are comfortable with.

Time to go back to my crayons,
kat

For some reason, people who play with me, or see me play, keep saying I'm a heavy bottom. although I'm sure I don' t know why.

Maybe all the blood has something to do with it.

Most often it means more physically intense than the norm, but can also mean psychological intensity as well.

Or that particular person might just be using it as a ruse to try and use a term people consider "more special" so you'll feel complimented and more likely to listen to them.

IME with these terms the word heavy is supposed to mean more intense, they can take/give more pain, more psychological torture or whatever than others.

I really dislike the use of such relative terms, but until someone develops a device by which to accurately measure pain, both given and received , those terms are all we have.
