In an effort to halt the killing of black cats out of superstition, an Italian animal rights group has declared Saturday 'black cat day'.

Poor things; i love cats, black and otherwise.

Wow. My mother's side is all Italian and I had no idea this went on. What a disgrace.

Funny, in Ireland black cats are considered "good luck" while white cats are considered "bad luck."

Shelters in NJ won`t adopt out black cats around Halloween,for this reason.

People suck.

I have my doubts about the 60,000 black cats killed a year estimate. From what I have read, that is just a urban legend that they are used in Satanic rituals. We had a black cat when I was a kid, and that was during all of that Satanic panic. People warned you to keep them in during Halloween or else they would be grabbed up by Satanists and sacrificed. Of course that was all a bunch of hooey, and I suspect this is much of the same.

Not a urban legend, really.More of a case of stupid people acting out fantasies. Not necessarily a bunch of satanists,but rather a bunch of wannabees.

With almost 300 million people in the US,the number of stupid people adds up.IMO,60,000 is an inflated number,but it`s a real problem.

I'm not saying there are not sickos running around doing things like this. I have a cat, although she is not a black cat. I have had her for 11 years, and I love that cat. A couple of years ago there was someone running around my little town here disembowling pets for the fun of it. It made the local papers, and I like everyone else started keeping our pets inside. To my knowledge, they didn't catch this person or persons. But I don't see this as exclusive to black cats. Cats and dogs are in abundance, and they are easy targets for the disgusting people that reside among us.
