missturbation -> Book Club.... (11/20/2007 4:47:46 PM)

I know we have had loads of threads on books before but i thought it would be nice, well for me anyway who is an avid book reader to post about books we reccomend others to read.
Figuring title, author and a short 'what it's about' so others can enjoy what we've enjoyed if they fancy it.
After all as a few other threads here have shown reading is a dieing hobby and needs some help lol [:D]

The thirteenth tale by Diane Setterfield.
'Angelfield house stands abandoned and forgotten. It was once the imposing home of the march family - fascinating, manipulative Isabelle, Charlie, her brutal and dangerous brother, and the wild, untamed teins, Emmeline and Adeline. But angelfield house conceals a chilling secret whose impact still resonates.....

(Has a touch of sadism and masochism in, in an ending up in an asylum way lol)

Good evening, misst.

For those into health, I cannot recommend highly enough Good Calories, Bad Calories, by Gary Taubes. He blows so many holes in the "fat is bad, cholesterol will kill you" hypothesis, that it may never recover. Over 100 pages of notes and bibliography, citing source after source after source.

All Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K. Hamilton
So far their are about 15 books. Maybe 16 if the new one came out.

The books are about a vampire hunter named Anita Blake and her life. Dealing with the world of zombies, vampires and wereanimals. Also in a couple of her books they deal with  bdsm subjects. Her book Narcissus In Chains was set in a fetish club.

Her books make me smile. I can't wait until the next one.

"The Twelve Caesars" by Suetonius. Translated by Robert Graves. It should really be subtitled: "The Sex Lives of Famous Ancient Romans." Allegedly, this is the record of ancient Rome that Bob Guccione based the film "Caligula" on. Juicy details about the rulers of Rome, and how some of their excesses led to their fall, and others to their popularity with the people of the time.

"The Reign of the Phallus" (Sexual Politics in Ancient Athens) by Eva C. Keuls. Detailing how there was a major counter movement within the ancient Athenian patriarchy, showing how their hardline stance- that men were supreme and women secondary- contributed to the downfall of that civilization. A must for "fantasy planet" types, who think that male supremeacy is "natural" and "the one true way."

"War of the Worlds: Global Dispatches" Edited by Kevin J. Anderson. H.G. Wells' martian invasion of 1879 as witnessed by Jules Verne, Mark Twain, Rudyard Kipling, H.P. Lovecraft, and so on... Amazing stuff!

Oh, and I was lucky enough to pick up a box full of Andre (Andrea) Norton paperbacks the other day at a flea market. If you haven't encountered her writing before, I strongly reccommend it to you... the Witch World series especially. On her worst day behind the typewriter, she blew worthless hacks like John Norman into the weeds.

Through a Distant Mirror, by Barbara Tuchman
A study of  England and France in the 14th century centering on the life of the Sieur de Coucy, who was Froissart's patron and was intimatly involved in most of the major events of the period.
The Silmarillion, by Tolkien
The stories of the events that precede the Lord of the Rings

I read those also!
I am re-reading "Mistral's Kiss" before I buy "A lick of frost".
I also have her book "Death of a Darklord". But I can't get into it for some reason.

Bipolar's post reminded me of Robert Graves...he has many, MANY good books. One I read some 25-30 years ago the name of which escapes me was about Belisarius, very good.

Arpig,

Nice to meet up with another reader and fan of history. :)

pinksugarsub -> RE: Book Club.... (11/20/2007 7:35:51 PM)

i'm gonna re-read Erica Jong's 'Fear of Flying' and maybe get into some of her other writings.  'Fear of Flying' is about the adventures of a sexually liberated young woman in the '70's and contains an explanation of the famous 'zipless f**k'.

"Eat Pray Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert.  Funny, heart tugging book about a woman discovering pleasure, spirituality and how to balance the two, while traveling in Italiy, India and Indonesia.  It's a laugh-through-tears kind of read.

Say Miss.....

The new pictures are looking damn good....but I miss the one with wet hair and the wrap-around towel. ; }

As for books:  I highly reccomend ''Shock Doctrine'' By Naomi Klein.

This Canadian girl gets down. It's a book that ties so many loose ends together. It's a great look /feel on how the socio-economic concept of Neo-Liberalism /Free Market aligns with the neo-conservative’s preemptive war doctrine as the ultimate force of destabilization and social-dislocation.

Plato's Republic.......it's a bit old ([;)]), but it does provide an insight into many aspects of modern society.

' The Dark God ' by Nicholas R. Mann.

His personal journey through the underworld. A good read! From being a searching traveller in the seventies, winding up in a Turkish prison, alongside the American ex olympic swimmer who later went on to inspire the film ; 'Midnight Express'.

Those that are interested, it is published by Lewellyn publications.
