Just like any special interest group holding their gathering. Sometimes its coincidental.
I have in the past had Dominants join me in a multiple scene--be it four Doms flogging one sub or having four subs to do a scene with and or other varieties of creative scenes. But, for me I do a scene for myself and those who are in the scene with me. I'm not there to entertain the 'peanut gallery.'
In Washington, DC and vicinity--we're lucky to have many dungeons to work with. I enjoy The Crucible most of all, due to space in a warehouse and the many stations offered on the floor. There is a side area which offers more space and a upper loft area where socializing can take place and can have a rafter's view of the entire dungeon. Photos are available to see at www (dot) the-crucible (dot) com to which the dungeon changes as far as set ups and restraint furniture as to keep it fresh and variety given.
At The Crucible, we can often see people doing bullwhip scenes, fire scenes, fire flogging scenes, Florentine whip work be it floggers or single tails, spanking and paddling, bondage, suspension bondage on the wench, lifting a person a floor high, inverted bondage and flogging has been one of many fun scenes for me; caning, needle and or blood play, genital torture too. Knife, sword and or ax play, role-play interrogation scenes, jail scenes. Many, many varieties of the dominant-submissive energy exchanges.
Those who have private dungeons have made them to what the dungeon owner's tastes are. Space often determines how much a person has to work with. But, some private dungeons would be beautiful features in BDSM's version of "Home & Garden" magazines.
Just some thoughts.

Very good points. Having a space that's well-equiped and laid out by people who understand how much space is needed for various activities is crucial. I was reading your description of the Crucible and thinking how awesome that sounded, then realizing that we have all that in Denver, too, at either of our two clubs, with the exception of being able to raise someone quite so high off the floor. We have to wait for ThunderintheMountains for that type of suspension. 
One thing about having such a big conference here is that at least once a year, we have an influx of people from around the country and from other parts of the world. It keeps the blood circulating, sometimes literally. Thunder has gained a reputation as an anything-goes in the dungeon (as long as equipment isn't being damaged and bystanders are not impacted. People are able to do resistance play, takedown scenes, wrestling, piss (mostly in the men's dungeon), blood, suspension hooks, all kinds of fire (limited to the garage playspace)... I can't think of anything that's off-limits. Watching a scene that incorporates elements you might not have considered fun before, like maybe chocolate pudding or a particular type of humiliation, really gets the mind turning and recharges the batteries. It's just about impossible to be in environments like that and then go back to mac-and-cheese stuff like nothing but flogging.
