In another blow to the Motor City's tarnished image, Detroit pushed past St. Louis to become the nation's most dangerous city, according to a private research group's controversial analysis, released Sunday, of annual FBI crime statistics.

The study drew harsh criticism even before it came out. The American Society of Criminology launched a pre-emptive strike Friday, issuing a statement attacking it as "an irresponsible misuse" of crime data.

The 14th annual "City Crime Rankings: Crime in Metropolitan America" was published by CQ Press, a unit of Congressional Quarterly Inc. It is based on the FBI's Sept. 24 crime statistics report.

It took a study to figure that out?

That city is a mess in so many ways.....

um... its called the murder capital of the world for a reason, dontcha think?

Next year it'll be Washington, D.C. again.
They take turns.
I checked out Michigan in my "Traveler's guide to the gun laws of the 50 states."
It's a "shall issue" state for carrying concealed weapons which means the police, mayor or county officials "have to" issue a permit if the requestee qualifies.
So, you'd think that Detroit would be a "safe" city with average citizens being able to "pack heat."
What is it about Detroit that makes it so bad? This seems to be an anomilie.
Anyone know?

Just read an article in Yahoo about it but it didn't give any reasons for this.
The Police are of course pissed in Detroit!
I can see Washington DC being the number one murder city in years past but we all know the reason for that, their DRACONIAN gun laws!
If the criminals "know" that people can't own guns then they can rob and steal with impunity.

The manufacturing jobs that once fueled Detroit have, in a large part, been outsourced overseas.  This means the income base that working class folks depended on for their livelihood has dropped sharply.  The upperclass who depended on that same income base have moved on to brighter opportunities in Austin, Denver, Silicone Valley, Portland, etc.  Those who could not afford to leave the city have remained to squabble over what precious little is left.  This means a huge decrease in the tax base, and an increase in illegal activities.  This means fewer cops, more corruption, and no stable means for a decent person to make a living.  I would suggest this topic is closely linked to the State of Michigan being unable to meet it's own budget demands.

There are some good paying jobs in Detroit, but the people who have them don't live there. There are many affluent communities that surround Detroit and those people commute in and out of the city and the surrounding burbs for the better paying office jobs and technical jobs.

Also, you have to understand that Michigan's economy has been dependent on the American automotive industry....and that has been seriously declining for a number of years. There hasn't been enough new business development to compensate for it's loss.

Stephann, I've never been to Michigan.
I knew things were bad up there but not how bad.
It's getting more obvious all the time that this "global economy" is not good for working class and now middle class people in this country.
We need to get out of these one way "trade" deals and other things we've gotten into.
I have basically become a "non-consumer" over the last few years and consequently have an extra $11,000 in my savings account that could and would be spent on consumer goods if I could find any that are made in the USA.
I want a telescope but I can't find one that's made here so -no telescope!
Until we get rid of Bush and start heading in another direction people should start saving money like me and *stop spending money.*
Maybe by doing that we can make some of the traitorous companies that used to be American Companies go bankrupt.
Who cares about them anymore anyway?
No Americans will lose their jobs because of them now! Fuck 'em!

kdsub -> RE: Detroit named "most dangerous city" in America (11/18/2007 9:37:13 PM)

popeye...you can pack heat in St. Louis too...Just wondering...maybe there is a flaw in your reasoning about low crime and the right to carry.
Myself I think it makes no difference either way...except there are more rounds in the air for the innocent to stop.... I say carry shotguns...less collateral damage.

popeye1250 -> RE: Detroit named "most dangerous city" in America (11/18/2007 10:57:20 PM)

KD, also there's the matter of drugs.
And as Mistoferin said, those laws are new in Michigan.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Detroit named "most dangerous city" in America (11/19/2007 12:47:39 AM)

I saw those reports in the paper this morning.  Nearby Little Rock placed 13 on the list, and Memphis was in the top 5 I think.  What all of these cities including Detroit have in common are losses in manufacturing jobs and white flight over the past 30 years.  If you take a look at the bedroom communities and suburbs surrounding these cities, they are always low in crime and fairly well off economically.  All of these cities are victims of their own mismanagment.  Detroit never fully diversified their economy and completely depended on the auto industry.  Because of unions and over taxation, the auto industry has pulled up their stakes and left.  You can find similar situations with other industries in cities with bad crime rates and high poverty levels.

This is not a global market issue popeye, it is a domestic issue and the relationship between local and national government.

kdsub -> RE: Detroit named "most dangerous city" in America (11/19/2007 8:34:13 AM)

Damn Detroit beat us by one point…well at least we won the World Series!! I figure here in St. Louis… at the present rate …we should be below the national average in two years… There will be no one left to murder…we’ll all be dead or in the suburbs.

That list is only a sampling of cities and not inclusive....and actually Saginaw, which was not included on that particular list, has higher crime rates than Flint. I think the exception is murder...but they are almost running neck and neck on that too. Last year Saginaw was ranked 5th on the MSA list(different list) and Flint came in at 9th. http://www.crimetrends.com/id4.html
