Level -> New Zealand bars Brit's wife for being "fat" (11/18/2007 10:49:53 AM)

quote:

A British man who moved to New Zealand has been told by officials that his wife is too fat to join him.

Richie Trezise, 35, a rugby-playing Welshman, lost weight to gain entry to New Zealand after being rejected for being overweight and a potential burden on the health care system.

His wife, Rowan, is now on a strict diet. However, she has been battling for months to shed the pounds so they can be reunited and live Down Under.

Mr Trezise moved to New Zealand in September after shedding two inches from his waist on a crash diet. He said that if his wife was not allowed to come out by Christmas they would abandon the idea of emigrating.

His employer-backed skills visa was initially rejected by immigration officials when they discovered that his body mass index, or BMI, was 42, making him morbidly obese.

"It cannot afford to import people into the country who are going to be a significant drain on our health resources."

If only the US could adopt such a practice our health care system wouldn't be so burdened that rates for insurance is sky high.   Kudos to them for putting their own first.

Humm I know what you mean the number of fat foreigners moving to the US is crippling the health care system there isn’t it?[:D]

His BMI was "42?" Wow, he was morbidly obese!
I just had mine done at the Gym 2 weeks ago and my BMI was 17.
My weight was 235 and the lady told me I need to get down to my "ideal" weight of 209.
So I workout hard 3 days a week including 10 different weight stations for a "total body workout" and 40 minutes on the treadmill for "cardio."
I've cut out Coca Colas for a month so I'll weigh myself the second week of Dec to see how much progress I've made.
I believe the U.S. weeds out people who want to immigrate here for diseases too. We can't have people with diseases comming into this country to take advantage of our healthcare system.
There was an article on Lou Dobb's show a couple weeks ago about foreigners who get visas to come here who need operations.
They get their operations and screw and leave the Taxpayers to foot the Bill!
Just another immigration related scam!
That's why I think it should be *extremely difficult* to get into the U.S.
You can't blame New Zealand for wanting to protect it's Taxpayers and Citizens. Too bad our government here in the U.S. doesn't care as much about the Taxpayers and Citizens like N.Z. does!

If you look at a map of Australia you'll notice a big Island to the right lower hand corner.
That's N.Z.
It's actually two islands I think.

Raechard -> RE: New Zealand bars Brit's wife for being "fat" (11/18/2007 11:16:49 AM)

Yeah but which one is the original Zealand?

popeye1250 -> RE: New Zealand bars Brit's wife for being "fat" (11/18/2007 11:22:42 AM)

I think the "origional" is in a section of Holland.
"Zeeland" meaning "land near the sea."

Raechard -> RE: New Zealand bars Brit's wife for being "fat" (11/18/2007 11:28:44 AM)

I see, thanks popeye.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, at the peak of his bodybuilding career (yes, young 'uns, he was champion of the world multiple times, before he was an actor, before he was a governor), would then also have been refused entry? His BMI indicated that he was morbidly obese too.

Mind you, I think its a good idea to screen people. In the UK we have tuberculosis (TB) running wild again now, and it didnt sprout out of the ground.

First off, we need to decide if being fat is a disease or a choice.  If it's a choice, by all means, restrict entry until they stop "choosing to be fat."  If it's a disease, then let's look at the ramifications.

Health care system?  Probably not worse than a smoker.  Contagious?  No.  So why ban them on that premise?

I'm not one to tell anyone what to do, but it seems they have written a law implying that fat people choose to be so.  Not a bad thing, in and of itself, just not acceptable by our over-PC standards.

Vive la Difference!

Yours,

benji

Well, it depends on the individual.

Lady Ellen, didn't Arnold recently have a by-pass operation?
Muscle weighs three times as much as fat tissue.
I don't think normal BMI's would apply to heavily muscled people or professional athletes.
But, I'm not an M.D. so I don't know.

domiguy -> RE: New Zealand bars Brit's wife for being "fat" (11/18/2007 12:41:46 PM)

It is obviously a horrible and fast acting disease....I once talked with a sub who claimed she was 5'8" and 145 lbs...Upon meeting she weighed over two bills...We had spoken just the day before! In less than twenty four hours she had manged to gain over 60 lbs....I have no idea if this shit is contagious...Just wasn't willing to take the chance.

It would be interesting to know if they screen out all such "potential burdens," and not just those they consider "too fat."  Do they screen for mental illnesses as well and all types of other health issues?  Or is it just the fat folks they don't want?[8|].............luci

No idea Popeye. But as an ex bodybuilder in the age of steroids (though by all accounts he was all natural) it wouldnt surprise me if there were many possible consequences to having imbibed. We also have to consider he's getting on in years, and is in a stressful position now - I mean, would you want to be associated with the current poltical system over there?

Lucy, one would hope so!
I wouldn't want psychotics or scitzophrenics slipping through the system to wreak havoc on innocent citizens!

Arnold wasn't natural, not after he came to America. [8|] And that isn't a slam on him, I have a great deal of respect for Arnie.

Raechard -> RE: New Zealand bars Brit's wife for being "fat" (11/18/2007 12:49:43 PM)

I once saw an interview of Arnold and you could literally see his heart beating in his chest and I thought to myself that can’t be good, although it not beating at all would be worse I suppose.
