I'm not a big fan of Hillary, by any stretch, but let's recognize the facts;
NAFTA allowed other countries (specifically Mexico) to produce products for American distribution that caused American jobs to leave here (America) for foreign shores that American producers weren't willing to produce these same goods for.
Now, whether we can all agree that that's true, we can certainly agree that Americans weren't willing to purchase those goods for prices that Americans were willing to manufacture them for....and other nations were.
The evidence is solely in our purchasing habits.
Had we all...in an enclave, opted to stand outside every Wal-Mart, True Value, Home Depot, Lowes....and every local chain with 10 stores or more decided to stand out there with our placards demanding that these stores bought products from American manufacturers...at some higher price than those manufactured by nations allowed to produce under NAFTA....
We'd have had a right to bitch.
But we didn't.
Those of you who have Tupperware, RubberMaid, and then Halloween, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and other candle(s) you've bought in the last 72 months, that have been made out of this country...you have no argument.
Your 4th of July fireworks....(also not made here).
Every one of the calendars that you've bought from Hallmark since 1996...has been manufactured outside of this country.
And we've lost a few jobs in the process.
Now....
Every one of you that thinks that the upcoming recession is going to affect you negatively as it has in every recession in the past....has a few new lessons coming.
It will.
But not quite in the the way you think.
We've lost (depending on who's counting) between 250,000 and 750,000 jobs in this country since 1996, and today, due to NAFTA, CAFTA, and all the other outsourcing 5 letter acronyms...enough that it hurts.
In the meantime, we've saved enough to pay for not only 2,500,000 jobs...in all the Chinese barbeques and Indian software we've purchased...but as well....another trillion in health care due to savings we've accumulated by not paying $115,000.00 to pay some young doctor to review your X-Rays....and paying some young (totally qualified) Indian doctor $27,500.00 to review the very same X-Rays.
In the meantime, we've paid the Arabs another 29 kabillion.
I'm constantly amazed at all the people who spend endless effort to arguing, bitching and complaining how our government, the world and everyone else (other than us of course) is out to get us....and I'm equally...and constantly amazed at how few of us stand up at the polls and say...."this ain't right...I can't accept this"...when in fact...the world's outsourcing has benefitted us substantially.
And now my point;
We've lost a substantial number of jobs.
Indeed.
And over the next 25 years we'll lose still more.
But guess what?
Because our world...indeed...our country has lost so many manufacturing jobs (which includes both data, software and absolutely...barbeques)....we'll lose less in a downturn.
Yes...it's true. We'll do "less worse" (not "better") in the next downturn...because we'll have fewer manufacturing jobs to lose.
That doesn't mean we'll do better in the next downturn...which most anticipate within the next 16 months, just less worse.
The global economy has it's advantages. As it turns out....doing "less worse" in this day and age is an advantage.
There are other advantages...some of which would surprise most as to our ability to stand taller in the world economy...but this one is one I'm confident few have considered.
(Let the volcanic blasts begin!!!!).
