I am looking for a gasoline slave, that is the only way to go. I am just waiting to see that as a fetish on here. He can meet me at the gasoline station, fill my tank up, pay for the gas and smile[;)], then I will give him a kick in the ass and leave. We can do this once a week, NOW this would be pain.

It's 3 bucks a gallon on average here. The cheapest I have found is about 2.95 a gallon. While I do recognize the war as having something to do with elevated gas prices, it's not the primary reason. China and India are all using huge amounts of petroleum and it's driving the demand and prices up. This would have happened regardless of who was in office or what the economic policies of the United States are. It's not really affecting me all that much as I don't drive a gas guzzler. My little Nissan truck has a 14 gallon tank, and I can go 2 weeks usually before I have to fill up. For all the SUV drivers, you are getting what you deserve as far as I am concerned.

I think we should have nationwide strikes like they do in France. A Yahoo article said that the Truckers are really hurting and that many Independant Truckers may go out of business because of this! If that happens we're all in trouble! This could cause a reccession.

I'm in CA. $3.50 ($3.499 for the snarky) last time I filled up. What happens when we do hit $5.00 a gallon nationwide is a fundamental shift. At that point, shale oil becomes economical, and WE, the good old U.S. of A. have the biggest reserves of that on the planet. What I'm noticing right now is a decrease in the mileage I'm getting per gallon. I have a sneaky hunch more ethanol is making its way into the mix as a form of price control.

This kind of price increase hasn't been seen here yet, but everyone is concerned. Already some cost-shifting from companies to employees for gas used on the job has begun, effectively putting pay rates in a declining position. That's not something that the area can withstand easily; more people will drop out of the middle class because of this here. pinksugarsub

Extracting and refining shale oil is still a developing technology. The best method hasn't been determined yet. I can envision some of those processes using and contaminating lots of water. Shale oil is one way to go for us here in the States. I think liquid coal would be easier, and I have read that it is competetive with oil when oil gets over $35 a barrel. We have the largest coal reserves of any nation in the world. There are environmental problems attached to liquid coal, but the technology is there to make it cleaner. South Africa has been using liquid coal extensively for years.

Being a frequent visitor to Europe, and just back from Eastern Europe about 10 days ago, I don't know where the gas is $12 per gallon. $8 per gallon yes, $7 per gallon yes. But I didn't see anything even close to $12 per gallon. I will note however, that the Europeans pay exactly the same price for gasoline as here in the US, or for that matter, just about everywhere else in the world, except where gas prices are government subsidized such as in Iran, Saudi Arabia and Venezuala. Gasoline and crude are purchased on a worldwide commodities market in New York. Everyone pays the current market price. The additional price at the pump paid in Europe is all tax. They do tax the crap out of gasoline in Europe, with the Czech Republic the lowest tax country and France the highest tax country. But they're all democracies. If they want lower taxes on gasoline, I'm sure they know how to pull a lever in the voting booth just like we do here in the US. One final note .... automobiles in Europe tend to get about twice the gas mileage when compared to American vehicles. Cars that actually achieve 45 and 50 miles per gallon are common. Certainly SUVs that get 10 and 12 miles per gallon are all but unheard of in Europe. When you consider they're getting about twice the mileage and paying about twice the price, the cost per mile of transportation is about the same. It didn't bother me one bit when I was paying $7 and $8 per gallon. It was the same $50 fill up every couple of days, for an equivalent amount of driving.

Owner59 .... You are correct, when Bush was elected, crude was $24 per barrel. At the same time, the US dollar was bought almost 1.40 Euros. Now one US Dollar buys only 0.65 Euros .... a more than 50% drop in the dollar vs. the Euro. You'll find that during the Bush presidency, the US Dollar is down similarly against almost all major world currencies. The US Dollar is down for reasons completely unrelated to the price of oil. That is a whole other discussion altogether. But when comparing the price of year 2000 oil, purchased with year 2000 US dollars, would put the current price of a barrel of crude at about $50 (in 2000 dollars), not $100.

Well, as much as I dislike Bush....I cant blame him for gas prices. He has no control over it. The Iraq war hasn't helped obviously but the reason crude has gone up so high is China. China is becoming a very heavy user of oil as they are becoming more industrialized and modern. More and more people in China are driving cars every day and this is causing demand to skyrocket. When demand goes up (or supply drops), the price goes up. That's economic 101. And yes, oil price has nothing to do with the value of the dollar since we are sitting on a ton of oil reserves (Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico especially) and the environmentalists wont let us drill it. Therefore we can't export any and we can't sustain our own energy needs. We need to inport it from Mexico, Venezuela, and Saudi Arabia. If we could drill our own oil, build a few refineries, and modernize our energy infrastructure....we will have gas under a dollar a gallon. But because the debate between Dems and the GOP is so fierce over energy policy.... no one's police is getting through. Both sides have dug their heels in and are refusing to move.

Since over 70% of our GNP is money spent via consumers, increased prices in gas is just another indication the economy is getting worse. How much money would we save if we stopped all foreign policy spending? I mean even the supposed humanitarian shit too. Orion

Balance the budget or balance the trade deficit? Balancing the budget would not be that difficult. That can be done within a year or two if the government really wants to do it....even create a surplus. But you have to becareful.... a high surplus would increase the value of the dollar which would make the trade deficit worse. Balancing the trade deficit is a bit more challanging.... a lot of things need to change. NAFTA needs to be dumped. And the government needs to start reining in corporations.

While you may be right about those points,my beef is that now,today and everyday,we pay out a billion dollars to foreigners,for oil and NG. While most of the money goes to Mexico,Canada and Venezuela,some of it goes to the Saudis,who are funding/sponsoring half of the suicide bombers in Iraq,as well as a shit load of other terrorist groups. We have got to beat this problem.It`s a national security issue,IMO.Grabbing someone else`s oil ,is not the answer. We should have listened to Jimmy Carter 30 years ago.At the very least,we should revisit his energy policy now.The energy policy we have now was writing by(literally) the oil business,who`s interests are selfish.
