My Daddy recently gave me the LOTRs movies so I can watch them whenever I like. I love LOTRs, I have read it more than once, and I have watched it multiple times as well. I have been watching it over the last week here and there, and I got to thinking about which characters from LOTRs that I identify with, and there are many that I do identify with. I see these characters as wonderful and imaginative archetypes with dimension, which is why the story continues to resonate so strongly. It is hard for me to pick one character that I most identify with because I am a multi dimensional person, but there is one that I find more compelling than the others that touches me because what he does and how he acts is something I can see myself doing... I identify with Samwise Gamgee. The reason I identify with him is his loyalty to Frodo, his loyalty supercedes his interest in the quest on some levels. There is a part in the movie where Samwise refuses to be left behind by Frodo and walks into the water even though he can't swim, and there is something about that action that I identify with and touches me deeply... He is not after anything but to help his friend that he loves, and he loves Frodo. On some level I identify with Galadriel, but moreso with Samwise Gamgee If you are a fan of LOTRs is there a character that you deeply identify with, and if so, who and why? I hope my Daddy posts an answer to this because I know the answer as we have talked about it in the past on a few occasions...

Definitely Galadriel for me - something very me about being so detached and yet intimately bound up with the world. Mind you, when Aragorn's around I'd vote for Eowin second or that other elfy gal, the one he marries, whose name now quite escapes me - presumably distracted, having thought of Aragorn. E

Galadriel is someone I identify with because she dreams herself into other people's realities, and she is very connected to the collective unconscious... which is something I can increasingly relate to. My dreams blow me away at times

Frodo, the character just seems to resonate at this time. Other times: Boromir. Possibly it is that the venerable Mr Tolkein based his characters on all the facets of every individual, each LOTR character being a side he had seen in himself and so separated them to see himself at different times with different circumstances.

I'm a huge fan of Tolkien's work. I first read the trilogy when I was about 10, and have re-read it probably a dozen times over the years. I was a touch disappointed by the films (there should have been 6, and how could Jackson leave out the scouring of the Shire??? Then you have them turning Gimli into comic relief... Oh well) but I still enjoy them. I can't say there are any individual characters I particularly identify with, but ones worth noting would be Merry and Pippin, who get in WAY over their heads but honor their commitment and rise to the challenges, and the Ents, who would really rather be left out of the whole affair but ultimately bring all they have. I have read that Jackson will be doing The Hobbit as well. Looking forward to that.

Oh, Gandalf, I suppose. He's been around forever... and he's about the only character who knows what the hell is going on half the time. The only other character I can kinda relate to is Shelob.... because we're both into bondage.

I'd go with Eowyn....my will seems about as strong as hers... Though...if there was a lover for Legolas...I'd be her. No matter what. He's yummy.

Yeah, but Legolas is gay - according to large quantities of fan fiction written about him. There aren't too many female roles to choose from so I'll pass on identifying with any of them, but I do like Faramir. Yup. Faramir...... or was it David Wenham.... er...... That is what good writers do... I am fascinated with archetypes and literature. In fact I am fascinated with them in my research as an anthropologist.

I'm a complete Tolkien geek. Fan of all his books and I think the films will long stand as a standard for quality fantasy storytelling. I probably best identify with Boromir...he comes from a dysfunctional family, he's passionate, but flawed.

Hmmm... It seems Peter Jackson has developed some sort of issues about it. http://the-hobbit-movie.com/ I imagine there is too much potential money to be made for this movie NOT to happen sooner or later.

It has to be made no matter who makes it! I think it was Sinergy that told me that Jackson may not be the one that makes it a few months ago.... I was hoping that he would post on this thread because some of the things he has told me about the character he identifies with kinda touched me... but then again I am a marshmallow submissive.

I didn't say I believed it, or that its true. I was just pointing out that there seemed to be a disproportionate number of fan-fiction tales in which our pointy-eared friend is gay. Lets kick over the hornets' nest then - Tolkien's writing is awful; awkward sentence constructions, much too wordy and often the wrong words. Compared to truly great writers - Twain and Orwell sping to mind, Tolkien was a talentless hack. What saves him, and makes his work notable and enjoyable (apart from the Silmarillion, where he excels in demonstrating a lack of ability) is his imagination and capacity to tell a good tale, even if he tells it badly. Next to Narnia - written at the same time and in competition with The Hobbit and LOTRs, his work is brilliant. It created a whole new genre of fiction - yet it also set the state of the art for fantasy fiction which is still written in the same God-awful impenetrable and rambling style today. And as for Legolas - I'm sorry, but to me he looks like a guy looking like a gal. And I know about these things. Mind you, all the elf guys come across as a bit strange in the film - but then they would have a whole different viewpoint on gender expression and procreation, living for thousands of years, than we might. Also, being incredibly old as a civilisation and replete with the wisdom of many years and that heritage, one might think they might not be so hung up on the subject as we are either. Indeed, the elf women we get to see dont really conform to gender stereotypes either. E

I thought The Hobbit was simplistically written because it was a "tale", which was part of its charm.. Like the first couple of Harry Potter books, written in the style of someone telling a story to young ones

Tolkien's style is eccentric, I'll give you that. No one has been able to replicate the lushness of his prose style, which includes passages in several of the native languages of the varied races of Middle Earth. Another writer who has had these sorts of reviews lobbed at him was H.P. Lovecraft. Both were writers who were not just telling a simple story, but creating entire worlds, even entire mythologies, out of their own heads. Now, if you want to look at how true "hacks" would write high fantasy, you could look at John Norman's Gor, or Edgar Rice Burroughs's works. These were guys who were really just interested in the "slash and slay" scool of storytelling, who gave little to no thought to the integrity of the overall story... but were just concerned with earning the $0.02 a word they were getting from their publishers. Still, even these idiocies have their followers. Why? Because one gives insecure males ego strokes, and Barsoom is just plain silly fun.

I will also say, I am sorry that Robert Jordan died before he could finish his books... but he went on such a wild trail that it would take a lifetime to credibly wrap up all the plot points... but he was a good writer... may he rest in peace
