HUNTSVILLE, Ark. - A high school teacher killed a raccoon with a nail gun after discovering the planned subject of a skinning demonstration was alive. Superintendent Alvin Lievsay said a student's parent promised to bring in a raccoon for the exercise, but surprised teacher Jerick Hutchinson by bringing the animal in a live trap. Lievsay said Hutchinson, "who used to work in a slaughter house," took the animal outside to the back of his truck Friday and shot it with the nail gun. Maybe he was expected to skin it alive, and then return it to its natural habitat.

LOL. fuck a bunch of racoons, skinning them because the pelts are worth money is practical application-------regards the nail gun----must have been a paslode. BobTheBuilder

I hope he had the sense to send samples in for rabies. Raccoons have the highest rate of rabies of any animal up hereAnd a raccoon hanging fearlessly around the house who just walked right into a trap? I really don't think that one was healthy.

Darn, I was hoping that, after reading the heading, this was going to be one of those heroic stories... a crazed, rabid raccoon, menacing some little girl on the playground, and a teacher snatching a nail gun from a nearby contractor... "Get away from her, you BITCH!" With an epic struggle between the two before finally, the raccoon is dumped out the airlock.... er... shot with the nailgun. Instead, it's just another Arkansas, stupid, cruel redneck story.... dime a dozen. :(

What classes in high school cover the skinning of raccoons? Would this be the Arkansas version of Home Ec ? What is next, the discussion for how to properly poach a possum, or the aesthetic touches for serving armadillo on the half shell?

It was an agricultural class. They were to examine the contents of the stomach. Many animals can destroy crops… it is a common practice to examine stomach contents to see what they have been eating…Remember this is not NY city…but an agricultural area and important to them. The examining is not where a problem is…if at all…. but the way it was killed… Although I see no difference in a nail gun, hammer, poison or gas…dead is dead. Butch

In fact, "Nailgun" seems to be a pretty humane way of dispatching the animal.
