When youve had enough, really enough, you might start making changes to consume less in somw ways. So thats a good thing.

Well, I've been driving a Prius for about 20 months...it's a hell of a lot smaller than I prefer (used to drive a mid size SUV for years, but one day about 2 years ago I got pissed off at all the money we were sending to the Arabs and decided I could make do with a smaller car) but I've gotten used to it.

I'm not much of an environmentalist, so I don't do a lot of the "save the whales" stuff....but in all reality, maybe $100 oil is a good thing.  It's painful enough, as you indicate, to cause some real change.

gas prices ARE the envy of the world, but only because of a difference in how we tax. In most countries, all of the costs of bringing this product in are added directly into the cost of each gallon, or added at the pump in taxes.
We pay differently. We have a fairly high percentage of income and business taxes paying for the gas in many ways, raod repair, subsidies, military aid and wars to secure and stablize fuel producing regions, etc.

Oh, just an addition to my earlier rant on solar... this month's Popular Science has a short article on the guys developing a new photovoltaic paint... Not as efficient as real PV panels... but could still save you a TON on heating and air conditioning costs... all at a fraction of the price.
