When it comes to choosing the presidential candidate  you support. To what degree eg: 70:30 Issues vs Integrity etc. Yes I know it's hard to quantify but...

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Issues vs Integrity (11/11/2007 7:30:24 PM)

Integrity needs to be paramount, otherwise it matters not what they say they will do.

     None of the above.  I'll vote for the one I feel will be most competent in the office.

I am blessed, the candidates that I choose to support have both

Owner59 -> RE: Issues vs Integrity (11/11/2007 7:53:03 PM)

Agreed. If they don’t have integrity, what does it matter what their positions on issues are? Without integrity they can’t be trusted to keep their campaign promises. Sadly, this appears to be the case in about 99% of the politicians out there. The blame, however lies squarely with us voters. Most people would rather have an untrustworthy member of their own party in an office than a trustworthy member of the opposition. We sell out integrity in exchange for the heady thrill of seeing the opposition’s supporters looking so bummed out the day after an election.

You hope. I’m not usually this cynical but with politicians it’s easy to get pessimistic.

awmslave -> RE: Issues vs Integrity (11/11/2007 9:21:29 PM)

Certanly integrity is important. Otherwise the candidate may just tell you what you like to hear and eventually after assuming the post not deliver anything promised.
The highest integrity at this point in my opinion has Ron Paul and John McCain. From democrats Obama perhaps has some while the others have severe integrity deficit. The worst examples being Gov. Richardson and Mrs. Clinton.
In  contrary, interestingly, President Bush has high integrity and he delivered most he promised (tax cuts, prescription drug benefits). Still, he is regarded as rather unpopular. Pres. W. Clinton had integrity deficit and he did not deliver what he promised (during his election campaigns). Some think he was reasonably good president (I do not think so).

popeye1250 -> RE: Issues vs Integrity (11/11/2007 9:52:23 PM)

Integrity first.
If a president says he;s going to start deporting illegal aliens he should go out with the Troops and personally kick in a few doors.
"Good job Cheif, you got it on the second kick!"

 What planet are you from? Certainly, not this one..

One could argue the toss but wasn't Carter one of the Presidents with the most integrity? I thought Americans thought his presidency was a waste of time and space.

Politics and human relations are a dirty business, unless you are a saint that is and I haven't noticed many of them around lately.

Pretty much accurate on Carter's presidency, MC.

To the OP; I'd say 60% integrity, 40% issues, because as others have said, without integrity, you don't have anything, but issues certainly count. If you have someone with a high degree of integrity, but they want to do things you consider horrible for the country, you still don't have a powerful reason to see them in office.

I voted Dennis Kucinich last primary, and I will vote for him in the next.

If Nader runs in the general election, I may vote for him

LOL- something about a lamb is sheeps clothes. or is a tiger in elaphant clothes.

IrishMist -> RE: Issues vs Integrity (11/12/2007 9:56:14 AM)

Neither.

For myself; to see the integrity of a person, I have to know them personally; over time; and judge/see for myself that their actions match their words. I can not accomplish that with a person whom I do not know on a personal level.

As for issues; most will claim one thing; and turn around and do another to get a vote somewhere else.

Not sure what guides me when I vote; only that I choose a person who 'feels' right to me; and then I go with gut instinct.

popeye1250 -> RE: Issues vs Integrity (11/12/2007 10:04:10 AM)

The only candidates I see with any integrity are Ron Paul and Mitt Romney.
And Mitt Romney is "squeeky" clean! He doesn't even drink coffee or tea!
Contrast that to Hillary Clinton. All she has in her past is controversy, corruption and double dealings.
Oh, and a trail of dead people.
And that's just what we "know" about.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Issues vs Integrity (11/12/2007 10:14:16 AM)

Ever wonder why the Chinese connection and Hillary will pop up, and then within a few days no one is talking about it? I am still looking into Romney, but he seems okay, except that he has changed his stance on some issues rather recently. Need to watch him on those issues, as it may just be hot air to gain support.

popeye1250 -> RE: Issues vs Integrity (11/12/2007 10:22:29 AM)

What I can't figure out is why, with 300 million people in the country, do the Dems support someone like Hillary Clinton.
Every Presidential election they come up with very weak candidates and then wonder why they lose.
Plus, "integrity" is probably not a subject she'd want to talk about. Ever.
The Dems should get behind Kuchinich. I'd say that he has a very high level of integrity.
And, I like his stance on getting us out of "Nafta."
It was just soooooooo embarrassing traveling overseas when Jim and "Tammy Faye" Baker were in the White House!
"Hey Yank! Did you vote for that Wanker who finishes himself off in the White House sink?"

Level -> RE: Issues vs Integrity (11/12/2007 10:33:11 AM)

Yeah, I'm getting a major "flip flop" feeling from Romney. That's the kind of thing that soured me on Gore and Kerry before.
