If i may take a quick survey on this, what sort of software (for drawing or for photography) and what sort of cameras do you use to create your art?

i do realize that this has been asked before but new artists have posted since the last time. :)

There are so many choices out there, I doubt you'd find more than a couple of people that use the same thing from beginning to end. Myself...

I use a Nikon Coolpix 995 digital camera to take the initial shots.
I then use Adobe Photoshop 7.0 or Adobe ImageReady to edit (crop, brighten, darken, etc.)
I haven't yet invested in it, but I'm looking for a good "pen" or some other peripheral that is more precise than a mouse. (suggestions on what's being used out there would be appreciated)

Canon 20D
Photoshop V7, CS, and CS2 (each have nice advantages, CS2 file brouser sucks)

Thank you for sharing. i tend to draw in pencil and colored pencil, but when i scan the images they never look as good on the computer, which is why i was asking (and why i won't post the images yet). i'm also considering exploring photography. Like MsTempestRaven, i have a special fondness for black and white or black and white with a few touches of color.

I use one of the world's worst digital cameras EVER. (We argue about who's in charge. It wins.)
I draw in photoimpact 10. Don't like it as much as previous versions.. but it serves its purpose. Also I have an old wacom penpartner tablet. We're engaged. <3

As for software try Adobe's photoshop and Lightroom plus some filter suites (including Imagenomic, Topaz, onone). Since you are going to overprocess your images a Panasonic FZ35 or LX3 will be suffice.

Canon 5D M II & 20D.  Photoshop, Lightroom & several other pre & post production packages.

Drawings seldom look good when scanned 'it's a bummer'.  Get one of those sketch pads so you can draw directly in your art software.  You'd most likely want to use Illustrator for the rathern then Photoshop.

I shoot with a Canon 7D and 20D. For processing I use Photoshop, Aperture (and I'm considering switching to Lightroom) Two post production apps I use heavily are the Alienskin's Exposure which is a film simulator and RealViz (Autodesk) Stitcher.

Photoshop CS. However, if I'm going to actually draw or add text, I use Illustrator.

I'm not a photographer but I have an appreciation for art in all of its forms. In terms of graphics I like to tinker. I have a lot of things I probably don't know how to use, but for some reason I believe I need them.

I use...

Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended & LightRoom
Multiple filters - my favorites are onOne, Imagenomic, Auto FX, Tiffen, Nik, and Digital Anarchy
Tutorials - Lynda.com and Top Secrets
Fonts - Adobe Font Folio and Digital Juice

each has it's plusses and minuses

Paint shop Pro (3, 4, 7, 12 or X2 Ultimate); Photoshop elements 7 and 8, and many more

I loved Adobe v7, but lost it when my laptop crashed. Now I have Adobe 8 Elements, and I've found it annoying and frustrating. I don't really want to have relearn a program in order to tinker around with a hobby, so I gave up on it and went back to acrylics, watercolors and maybe oils. Besides, I like the smells and tactile pleasures available with actual paint and brush.

I love photoshop too, but it is rather expensive and a lot of people use an illegal copy. Why not try some  free and safe quality software:
best known is Gimp (or gimshop): for this program you will need to take some time to figure it out. http://www.gimp.org/features/
another good one, but a bit slower, is paint.net, more intuitive in use http://www.getpaint.net/
both are good for computer drawings and photo editing. Check also which extra plugins you want.

For now I do all my sketching in pencil and then scan them to the computer if I want to work with them, but as others have mentioned, they never look as good scanned. I've been looking at a drawing tablet and it's on my wishlist of soon to buys. LOL

As for photo manipulation and such I use Paint Shop Pro 7 & 9. Version 7 has an animation shop that I use for making banner ads and such. I've worked with Adobe CS, but I just didn't really get into it. I use it occasionally for certain projects, but I mainly stick with the PSP. I am a creature of habit.

Nikon D200 with a Nikon 70-200 2.8 lens until somebody deciced they needed it more then me :-{
I have used Paint Shop Pro, started with V3 now using V10. I have Illustrator for vectors and Vector Magic.
