NakedOnMyChain -> It Burns Us!!! (11/9/2007 11:07:02 PM)

I would like you all to know that I said the subject line in my very, very best Gollum voice.  Though I suppose I'm the only one who knows how well that worked.  Anyway, onward to my actual query, which is inane enough merit the most randomly stupid of the random stupidity.

In preparation for a large open play party in Indianapolis tomorrow evening I partook in the girlie ritual of removing hair from every part of my body I could reach.  (Yes, I know you really didn't want to know that.  Too bad.)  I typically use the Nair facial cream for sensitive skin on the fine hairs above my eyebrows.  I'm weird about body hair.  It is evil and must have strenuous war posed against it on at least a weekly basis.  However, as I lay in the bathtub and allowed the Nair to work its magic, I became engrossed in a wonderful fantasy epic novel by Jim Butcher and lost track of the time.  It stayed on quite a bit longer than it should have.  When I took it off I realized that the area where it had been applied was a lovely shade of crimson that would make the most boiled lobster proud.  Fortunately it isn't a large area, just a very painful strip that burns immensely.  I immediately washed the last traces of Nair off and used Aveeno sensitive skin lotion that tames redness on the affected area.  It helped quite a bit and it now it merely looks like I'm mildly sunburned.  You really can hardly tell, especially if I put makeup on.  However, it burns like the fiery pits of hell and I'd like to do something about it.

So, after that hilarious and hilariously long-winded anecdote, what would you recommend as a short term solution to a mild chemical burn?

Oh, by the way, you are allowed and even encouraged to laugh at me.

I would say try and enjoy it, but i guess you're not a masochist of you're trying to make it go away! [:D]

Years ago I thought it would be the answer to shaving / waxing my pubic area.

It was SO not a good idea.

Go to the pharmacy and get some straight glycerin.

And by the way ... nothing is really going to make it stop hurting but glycerin will help heal the skin.

rotflmao...well okay now that thats out of the way.
chemical burns of the type you are describing generally have to heal themselves.
I would try some a nd d ointment though. remember to wash it off some time before party since it tends to smell.
enjoy<weg>

Try applying an OTC hydrocortisone cream, like Cortaid.  It will reduce inflammation.  Other than that, you just have to wait it out.

don't put anything with oil on it and go out in the sun unless you want a really good sun burn on top of the chemical burn....like fryin bacon....but i am sure you know that.....

Hm, if it were in a more intimate area, i'd recommend applying ice just for variety, but that's a weird spot.

Benadryl makes a clear anti-itch gel that contains aloe and a mild topical anaesthetic, i'd probably try that.

Don't load it up with lotions or you'll end up with a mound of zits that will NOT improve the situation

that's my suggestion too, one with a pain reliever, and it may help it heal quicker.  and good old ice should help as well.

My former partner makes sure I keep an aloe vera plant around *I'm a klutz* - I've used it on burns (break off a piece of it and squeeze the gel onto the area) and it's very soothing.

I recently had a similar problem, and Estee Lauder's Advanced Night Repair Concentrate Recovery Boosting Treatment seemed to help some with the redness and burning.  According to the Estee Lauder website, it's recommended for use "after sudden skin traumas such as when skin is uncomfortable dehydrated, after excessive sun exposure, or pre- and post- microdermabrasion and chemical peels."  It's $85 for 1 oz, so it's probably not the kind of thing you'd want to buy just for this.  I was lucky enough to have a free sample.

Thanks to everyone who replied.  [:)]

As an update, hooray for small miracles!  It was a very mild chemical burn after all, and it had stopped hurting when I woke up this morning.  You really can't see the redness at all.  And I'd forgotten to mention that I have bangs that come down a bit below my eyebrows now, so it would be camoflauged anyway.  (I cut them a couple months ago.  I need to update my picture.)  So WOOHOO!  I don't have to be introduced to a ton of new people with my forehead as the main conversation starter.  "Oh, hello.  Lovely to meet you!  Trouble with your curling iron?  Pack of angry, swarming fire ants under your bed?  Moron with Nair?"  Bleck.  I think I'll lay off the Nair for a while, at least when I'm reading fantasy novels.  Because there's no way I'm giving up the books.
