I had both of my wisdom teeth on the left side removed on Saturday [the ones on the right were done 2 weeks ago], and for some reason the pain this time is a LOT worse. The sadist [dentist] gave me Vicodin and said every 6 hours, by Saturday night the on-call doctor was saying every 4 hours through Monday or Tuesday. Well, its Thursday, and Tylenol is NOT working. I am not a fan of taking Vicodin any longer than I have too, since its a narcotic and addictive. I have tried applying ice packs - 20 min, 20 min off; 3 Tylenol every 4 or 5 hours, nothing is working. The dentist's office said to take the Vicodin and that I, 'can't get addicted in such a short amount of time.' Does anyone have any alternatives besides the Vic?? I can't take NSAIDs, so they are out. I would REALLY like to get some sleep tonight.

Take the vicodin,w/ some advil,like 4 or 5.I know it`s not fun,but a few more days and you`ll be past the pain hump.So, take the drugs. Keep another set-up on your bed stand,for a middle night dosing Maybe a little booze? A good dousing with oil of clove.It`s powerful stuff,so start w/ a little at 1st. Good luck.

Taking more than the recomended dosage of even things like advil can be deadly. Tylonal too. You should not exceed the recomended dosage of the bottle. btw beauty, vicoden didn't even begin touching the pain when I had all four of my wisdomes out at once. The only thing that helped was to go to sleep and try not to lay on my cheeks. Advil is an NSAID, I will end up in the hospital and I don't drink. I will look at oil of clove. Thanks. The last time [the right side], the pain only lasted 2 or 3 days, this is day 6. I'm not a masocist, so this sucks.

if you are experiencing this much pain at this point of the game perhaps you should try to see the dentist tomorrow...just to rule out a dry socket... . take the vicodin...for tonight... . try to rest and check w/ dentist/surgeon tomorrow.

Vicodin really doesn't work on everything. I'd ask for something else- and make sure you're cutting out caffeine.

coming late to the party.... a dampened tea bag held between the teeth over the extraction site(s) can help some... TAKE the painkillers. yes, they're narcotic, but in the dosage you were given (probably 10-12 pills total, if that) you are not likely to get addicted. seriously. extractions, especially wisdom teeth, are prone to "dry socket", and that WILL be exceedingly painful. (i had 3 wisdom teeth removed at once....they flared badly when i was 5 months pregnant and i had to wait till i delivered to have them removed, and got dry socket on 2 of them.) oil of clove on a cotton ball can help, so can oragel. both of those are topical anesthetics, and will numb the area pretty well. between that and the painkillers, you would be set till the dry socket resolves itself. good luck kitten

By now, things should CLEARLY be getting better. They shouldn't be as bad, and certainly shouldn't be getting worse. As a veteran of several extracted teeth, my experience is that the 48 hours can be pretty rotten, but that is where you turn the corner. I'd be back in the dentists chair, pronto ! Something isn't right here.

Get back to the dentist......the pain should be gone...sounds like a dry socket issue, as mentioned. And as LA said, Vicodin may not be working for you....I got percocet when my wisdom tooth was removed, it worked fine, I only used 2 of them....got vicodin after a minor surgery, didn't touch the pain! Your dentist should have mentioned dry socket, it's not something to be fooled around with from what I've heard about it. Good luck.....i REALLY can feel your pain!

It seems like you are experiencing excessive pain. My son had 4 wisdom teeth removed at the same time and he was fine 2 days later. Did you have an oral surgeon or a dentist do this?

Have you even tried the Vicodan? It is highly unlikely you will become an addict in the course of a few days. If the Vicodan is not working for you then call the dentist/oral surgeon and let them know. Ask for something different and use it, it is prescribed to help you. It is not a weakness to need pain relief after surgery.

i was going to say sounds like dry socket - you need to go back and tell him how much pain you are in. Different pain meds work for different people. i had surgery and morphine didn't even phase me, but percoset did the trick. i was in the ER not too long ago in extreme pain and told them no morphine and to give me percoset instead - of course they didn't listen and i got a shot of morphine and layed in the bed all night in pain. For sleep why not try some antihistamine or take some nyquil to get you through the night? Worth a try.

It will help you sleep, may help with the pain, and unlike morphine or Vicodin, or even those OTC products many of which contain alcohol, it's not addictive and you can't be killed by an overdose. Good luck! Edited to add: That's what happens when you allow your slave to post independently. Sorry for the back-to-back M&b advice, but it does come from 2 different and distinct perspectives. One from need, the other from empathy and pragmatism.
