The Pentagon is considering easing its recruitment standards, particularly for persons with minor criminal records. In 2007, the number of Army recruits requiring waivers for misconduct, including drug use, theft, fighting, and carrying weapons in school, increased to 18 percent from 15 percent in 2006.

One has to think of Arlo Guthrie's Alice's Restuarant.

Its always been so amusing that if you are a minor offender you aren't good enough to go abroad and kill people.

I thought the recruiters were already going around those standards?  There have been many cases that made major headlines on such.

It is gonna save paperwork on waivers (and time to cannon fodder, the biggest thing) if the standard is actually lowered so that these things are not having to be dealt with. And of course it brings with it a whole new slug of otherwise unseemly people that could then be waivered, since to be garish, a murderer would not seem so ghastly.

Your friendly neighborhood recruiter.

don't ask, don't tell.

I think you would have to be waivered for masturbating your parrot tho, haven't seen the actual regs in some time, but-----I can imagine.

And people wonder why every one makes fun of the military.

I dont make fun of the military, and I am a member of the set of "everyone."

I make fun of the people who put the military in harms way for reasons that have nothing to do with national defense, like, for example, oil profits, drug trafficking, etc.

Just me, etc.

This is a great way to avoid instituting a draft. Just bust the kids for pot then offer them their life back if they will risk losing it in some foreign hell hole.

Actually, when I entered the Army in 80, they were still offering minor offenders the choice of jail or the Army.  For some it worked, for others, it made things worse.  I have my own issues with whom they allow entry to the Armed Forces, but that's neither here nor there......I think it's just the American people "voicing" their displeasure over a war we have no business being in....my thoughts are the same as Synergy's when it comes to the whole Middle East venue.  If the countries there weren't so oil rich, we'd be standing by letting them continue to kill each other.

If we want to protect our country from terrorists, we need to bring our military home, re-open the closed military posts and bases, and shut down our borders like other countries have.  Our military resources are so depleted right now, we'd be screwed if anyone actually thought about an attack on our country.  Our west coast is wide open.....you have the small bases in the San Diego area, and nothing else until Fort Lewis in Washington......if they haven't closed that one too.  Now that's scary!
