I think that the expression of anything overly personal in any kind of public forum is attention seeking behavior. I'm not talking about a few details here and a few details there, I am mean when someone logs on and posts some REALLY heavy and serious shit routinely. It's just bullshit behavior. One example would be a profile that starts by telling readers how someone's slave/sub or dominant has just died. I just don't need to know that right off the bat. I find such a disclosure kind of absurd. But it depends, I've seen people disclose tragic events and felt sympathetic too. There is some ineffable detail(s) that must trigger my bullshit detector. DesertRat has been here a while. I know that he lives in New Mexico with some cats and that his personal life has had some ups and downs. I take DesertRat to be a liberal of some kind. I have some broad strokes painted in, but nothing too obnoxious or attention seeking - just enough to have some sense of the man and consider him friendly. Healthy skepticism is obviously a good thing.

It does seem that some posters either the dramatists, aka the exploiters, or the sympathisers give their emotional all when making posts on the internet.

For whatever attention-seeking reason I feel an overwhelming need to state the obvious: even before the internet some people found it easier to confide in strangers things that they would often have a difficulty sharing with someone they knew. Most of us have a deep desire to be known and heard. Anonymity affords us some protection from our fears of being judged. We want connection but don't want to risk being hurt.and so we can now "play" at intimacy with less of an actual risk of being hurt. How we relate to others and how we perceive our connections ...think about what it says about our society, when this is as close as some of us want to get to many of the people that add to the color and textures in our lives.

First time I recall something like this online was back in 81. (Predating the Internet even.) There was a regular chatter in the CB Simulator chat rooms on Compuserve who suddenly died off and his "brother" was suddenly on the account to tell everyone. I might have bought it but I noticed that the brother regularly made the same spelling and typo errors as the supposedly deceased.

I knew a man like this in real life. No. Wait. TWO men like this. Both of them miraculously survived unsurvivable forms of cancer. They were so brave and ... ~sniff, wiping a tear~ ... strong. Munchausen by Proxy is primarily a woman's deal (from memory, and my memory could be failing). I wonder about Munchausen by Internet.

Now that I think of it I play this online game its a virtual world...well in it we are little avvies running around living our second life so to speak ...so you get friends and acquaintences well I do remember a few friends of mine saying that people they have known have done similar things basically faking death and then getting a pity party even a memorial service in game being held.......Tsk Tsk

sadly, when i first got a computer, i "met" a gal in a chatroom who had breast cancer, no insurance, dying, blah blah blah.... couldnt get insurance, health dept wouldnt see her, blah blah blah. i even asked my ex if i could take some money and take her to a dr.....offered to call patient advocates, blah blah blah.... this was her 2nd bout with breast cancer, the total mastectomy had missed some, and she couldnt afford reconstructive surgery...blah blah blah then i saw her one night at a party for aolers....she had bigger bewbs than me....and was a picture of health.....when i acted shocked and all, folks told me thats her MO...shes a sympathy whore....now i find she had a disease, as named on this thread-lol. sadly, now, i assume everything i read online is pure bullshit til proven otherwise.....but i sleep better at night.
