DES MOINES, Iowa - Rip Van Winkle slept for 20 years and woke to find the world had passed him by. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, woke up one morning recently to find that perhaps America has caught up with him. Paul, 72, has had a 32-year career in the House. But some voters have just now discovered Paul’s constitutionalist, individualist, “just bring all the troops home” creed. Last weekend in Iowa, Paul, running for the Republican presidential nomination, was greeted by 700 whooping fans at Iowa State University in Ames and another 300 at a rally in Des Moines. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21516892

Yup, Ron Paul and also Mitt Romney are starting to take off. I like both of them so that's a dilemna.

Just curious, why do you like Romney? He's changed his positions, and party, and wants to expand the military not contract it, he has commercials talking of jihad, and his view that this is a war that needs to be fought more, not less. Sorta the polar opposite of Paul. He also buys votes, literally(straw poll votes anyway). Did I miss something? I'd vote for him if it was between Rudy and Romney that's it. Right now the vast majority of the Republican party wants to win the war on terrorism and the war in Iraq. Until that changes, Ron Paul has no chance. Contracting the military is mostly a radical idea right now. Not even the Democrat front-runners support that. In fact, didn't Obama recently say he wanted to bomb Pakistan? And Hillary said she'll keep troops in Iraq through at least 2013. Even Democrats know it is political suicide to want to "contract" the military. You will be torn to shreds in the general election because you will be bombarded with questions about how you plan to protect America without a military. And the plan of "not pissing off the terrorists" isn't going to work. Americans dont want to forfeit the war. They want to win it and for it to be over with. That's what the people want. It's like a football game where you are winning but the game never ends.

Yeah, but Paul doesn't want to do away with the military, he just wants more troops back home, and a reduction in total numbers. Like the ones in Germany or the 130+ countries, that don't protect us from anything(most of them), could be on the border, or reduced, they serve no purpose. The polls say the majority of the public want us out of Iraq, and just like all previous wars we've left without winning, the staunch supports dry up as the months and years progress. It may not be at that level yet, but its coming on strong. My comments before were mostly just to point out how the two candidates he listed as his favourites, are so different. I'd say there are closer repubs in the running to Pauls views(not close but closer), and some closer to romneys. But paul and romney, are just like oil and water. It also has nothing to do with whether Paul can or can't win, I think it's about selecting the candidate that best matches you. I won't vote for anyone else in this election, I've viewed them all, and he's the one that is the nearest to my views. I'll just go to the titty bar on election day, or something if it's Rudy versus Hillary. I don't vote or encourage anyone to vote according to the way others vote, that is sorta the definition of sheeple. And those two are so far away from what I'd call a good candidate to ever vote for. IMO.

You aren't forced into selecting...that candidate might not be on the ballot, but I believe we still have the option of writing in the man/woman of our choice. Neither sheeple nor apathy would be My choice. Get out and vote, even if it means writing your preference in.

Considering that the RNC hasn't denounced Rush's announcement that anyone disagreeing with Bush Doctrine is either (A) Lying about being a Republican or (B) Crazy, it's not surprising that the "vast majority" of the Republican party wants to... You've THROWN OUT OF THE PARTY anyone with the balls to suggest thaty Bush Doctrine is wrong. That's a heckuva way to maintain your Ideological Purity. Purging out the intellectually unreliable. We already won the "war", Saddam is dead. We're losing the "Occupation". Occupation forces never "win" anything. Look at S. Korea, I want to know when we're going to bring our Troops home from there! It's the oil cos that don't want them to leave. Then they'd have to pay for their own security forces instead of getting a free ride from the Taxpayers. It's not "their" oil anyway. Want to see oil prices go down? Stop buying cheap plastic junk that's made in China!

Popeye: funny you mentioned South Korea. The BILLIONS we spend each year there are the first example I usually bring up when I explain how strong the military-industrial complex is in this country. And did you note the line quoted from Ron Paul's speech in Iowa in the article above: “Don’t you think 55 years is long enough to be in Korea?” The man KNOWS!
