Halloween, or Hallowe'en, is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31. It originated from the Pagan festival Samhain, celebrated among the Celts of Ireland and Great Britain. Irish and Scottish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America/Canada in the nineteenth century. The term is shortened from All-hallow-even, as it is the eve of "All Hallows' Day",[1] also which is now known as All Saints' Day. It was a day of religious festivities in various northern European Pagan traditions, until Popes Gregory III and Gregory IV moved the old Christian feast of All Saints' Day from May 13 to November 1. Many European cultural traditions, in particular Celtic cultures, hold that Halloween is one of the liminal times of the year when spirits can make contact with the physical world, and when magic is most potent It doesn’t take mush to make my house look like a witches cavern as I have candles and symbols abounding anyway. But I have a houseful and so we have also added vodka punch, dark rich fruit cake and bowls and bowls of sweets for the little ones who will flock to the door. Prinsexx, Lovely post, and thank you for the well wishes. This day is also my primary partner's and my anniversary, and her birthday. You can bet that we will be celebrating it to the hilt! Halloween actually goes back even farther than that there are referances to such festivals in just about every culture since histroy was first recorded, the earliest of these was in Egypt when they would eat one meal a year with the dead. The Babalonians (I think thats how you spell it) even had a fall festival where they had sex with corpeses (Tim Burton's wetdream). The Huns are actually the first people to trick or treat. they would dress up as local soldiers and such the go door to door demanding supplies for the "local" army. In Mexico their "day of the dead" (I'll be fucked if I can remeber what its called) was actually derived from their major religion (christianity) and is a day to remember their lost ones. My grandmother use to tell me old shintoist fables as bedtime stories one of them was called Yagu Oh. It was about how Oni would prowl around a village during its Fall festival each year. So to hide form the demons the villagers attended the festival wearing masks so the Oni could not tell who was a human and who was a demon. So Halloween seems to be pretty universal, and each culture has its own verson.

"El Dia De Murtos?" And yes, Halloween, or celebrations of harvest, and of respect (and a little fear) of dead ancestors go back to even the Druids in England, 2000 bc. Ray Bradbury makes a good case for it going back to pre-history, and the cult of the dead. America, however, gets most of it's Halloween traditions from Ireland, with it's "mischief night" and the horse headed god Muk'ola and his minions demading food from door to door to insure good luck in the coming year.

Funny, I was going to start a post about "Samhain" pronounced "sow-in." The History channel last night had a documentary about Halloween and how it origionated more than 3.000 years ago in Ireland with the Pagans. My parents both Irish were married 59 years ago today on Halloween. The documentary said that the Irish immigrants to this country in the late 1800's found it easier to carve pumpkins into lanterns than turnips so that's how that tradition started. In Ireland today they have a lot of bonfires. And in Tallaght just outside Dublin they like to use automobiles for bonfires! lol

Sow'-in - with "sow" pronounced as in "cow" or "how". Yeah man, ever carve a turnip? It sucks! Pumpkins are much easier. fergus

Its my first Halloween as a 100% legal adult... since I'm 21 now... and unfortunately... theres not a damn thing to do this year...
