Popeye, it would be fine not believing in international anything if countries stayed within their own borders but they don't. As pointed out in another post, the US has troops spread all around the world, they should be accountable to those countries in which they are situated or to an international body. So should everyone elses.

I remember you saying you have duel nationality so you are not completely against internationalism.

Meat, what do you think those "international lawyers" would say if their paychecks were all of a sudden switched from the U.S. and E.U. countries to oh, I dunno,...maybe HAITI or Venezuela?

Yes, I have US/Irish Citizenship.
And, I like many Americans don't want our Troops in foreign countries. As a Taxpayer I just don't want to pay for that stuff anymore!
And I have to laugh when they call it the "international" space station when only a few countries are paying for it.
In the 80's/90's Russia was involved in it but they couldn't afford to pay for it so it was in name only.
Anytime the U.S. is "invited" to participate in anything "internationally" that "invitation" is predicated with the thought that the U.S. will be paying the lion's share of the bills.
No thankyou.

Well, if theyre being paid by the countries against some of whom (UK and US) they would prosecute - what does that say? Biting the hand that feeds is rarely a good move?

"Biting the hand that feeds is rarely a good move? "

Well, if you're an OFFICER OF THE LAW, then you're not biting anyone's hand, you're promoting Justice.

In a nutshell, you've illustrated what's essentially wrong with the Bush Administration.

Their INSANE FUNDAMENTALIST RELIGIOUS BELIEFS, and the removal of people not subscribing to those beliefs, and replacing them with people who are Ideologically Reliable, has rendered the Department of Justice completely impotent.

Fargle, I agree with you there.
I think all religions should be outlawed.
Religions don't "unite" peoples they "divide" them.

EPGAH -> RE: Rumsfeld Flees France, Fearing Arrest (10/31/2007 10:03:18 AM)

International law(yers) are a GREAT idea! When do we get to charge OPEC with violating antitrust laws? Or wrongful death lawsuits on China for toxic toys, Iraq for suicide-bombers, and Mexico for illegal drugs?
And, of course, a few MILLION counts of tresspassing against Mexico...Would that count as an "illegal invasion", or is only America held to that particular standard?
P.S. if we were going to "steal" their oil to stop depending on OPEC cartel, Bush bungled that already too, GIVING--not selling--the oil-rich areas of Iraq back to their "government", which is as yet too weak to even be a proper puppet! Which means America(n taxpayers) get to foot the bill for the war, rather than "having Iraqui oil pay for it"!

Popeye,

I agree with you completely on that point. Religions divide, and greed and power corrupts.

I wish there was more we could do as citizens. This sucks: Feeling like there really is not much we can do right now to change the current power structure and world finance.

Five minutes with a French paratrooper - and he'll come unarmed, and I think it might be you that was taken down a peg or two m'dear.

You're right there.  The paratrooper would obviously jump to run from me and there's no fucking way I'm jumping out of an airplane.

Question for you........are Americans abroad subject to the laws of the country they are in?

(edited to add that the last question ought to read 'are citizens of country A subject to the laws of country B if thats the country they are in?')

If it's a crime committed in that country, directly done.  In our country, it's not acceptable to prosecute politicians for actions committed in the course of their job.  It's too easy for enemies to go after them for actions they disagree with.  The most you could do with Clinton was impeachment.. you couldn't analyse and prosecute for the Balkans.  Same with Rumsfeld.  *shrugs*

...how about this crime.....

http://www.indianexpress.com/res/web/pIe/ie/daily/19980205/03650164.html

...should that be prosecuted in the country where it happened, or should the USAF whisk the airmen out of the country so they can't stand trial?

..other links to the specific case..

http://www.cnn.com/US/9806/16/marine.cablecar/index.html

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/276359.stm

...now, i'm not saying the airmen are definitely guilty......but they were not allowed to be prosecuted by Italian authorities.
The offence, if any, occured on Italian soil (ok, airspace) so why shouldn't the trial have occured in that country?

i know its an old story, but we have been discussing legality and juristiction. There seems to be a culture of not allowing US military standing trial in other countries......how does that square with comments made in response to my question?

All finding it somewhere esle means is that its in the mainstream and has passed the filters.  Has nothing to do with its validity.
