This is an article about plastic surgery and basically.. to what extremes some women of every ethnicity seek to be like the other one.  My god... what are we doing to ourselves that some will just about mutilate themselves to achieve what others define as "pretty"?
(that was meant as a rhetorial question.  I wish there WAS an answer.)

I'm going to read it again as I scratch were it itches, belch, fart and spit off to the side in protest.

Wait a minute. Whats the problem here? Woman want to be taller, since taller gets you jobs. Are you shocked that women would go to such lengths to try and, "better" themesleves economically? They also see their legs as "ugly" according to thier own standards. And you fault them for what? Having sugery to correct what they see as flaws?

Do you have "flaws" according to your own standards? Would you correct those flaws if you could? If so, then bug off! Let those of us alone, who see our flaws and have the get up and go to fix those flaws. Women work on themselves not for you or for men, but for themselves. We as women dont need anyone else telling us how disgusted they are at what we do for ourselves. We just dont care what you think.

Go get your own life. Let us know how it goes if you like. But excuse us, we may be busy in our own succesful carrers at that moment, since we''ve worked so hard to get where we have gotten. Plastic surgery included. So we may not have time to listen to you tell us how hard it is to be a woman and hit that glass ceiling, due to the fact that yuor employers are promoting better looking people than you. Welcome to reality.

It is quite ridiculous. It's another example of people consuming what they don't need and shouldn't even want. The perfect consumer hates him/herself because then there are so many things they have to buy to correct everything that is wrong.

I suppose the one exception to this might be someone who has gender issues, or something like that. I'm not totally sure where I am with that concept, but what others do for themselves doesn't bother me in any case. They can do as they like.

So the best advice is to love oneself, it's better for one's emotional state and easier on one's available savings.

sophia37:

I'm not going to tell you what to do. I don't care.

Speaking only for myself, I would tend to romantically avoid anyone that had too many elective things done to themselves surgically. It just has self-obsessed and high maintenance written all over it.

Exceptions might be something like restoring one's appearance because of injury or illness. But otherwise I am just not that into the idea of beauty bought from a scalpel. I don't even like the appearance of fake boobs.

Edit: My profile journal entry of a couple of months ago touches on these issues. I stand behind everything I wrote then.

sophia,

My point being that women are still judged by outrageous standards.  Did you succeed in your life because of how you looked or your intelligence and capability to get the job done?  I just feel it's time to stop the insanity, thus my reason for my post.  Welcome to MY world. (geesh.. do you get this emotional at work?  Didn't mean to touch a nerve.)

Guys, did you know that women go to such extremes to alter their appearance?

Really?  Maybe some but I would say most do it for men or others in general.  I don't think the majority of women would go through breast implants, botox, plastic surgery, etc. if they weren't convinced it mattered to others.  If men or society in general didn't care, I don't think many women would either.

Maybe your reality and the reality of many women who care that much about what others think of their physical appearance but not MY reality or that of many, many other women the world over who have succeeded without fake body parts and injections of deadly substances into their faces.  All that is just not that important to many of us who focus on brains and talent and not superficial "beauty."  Reality encompasses all of us, not just ones that agree with you[;)]..............luci

FullfigRIMaam -> RE: Erasing Ethnicity (10/27/2007 10:07:40 PM)

I agree with you that it more than borders on insanity.  I can understand the surgery being available for major anomalies, injuries or deformities, but it has gone wayyy too far in my opinion.
I often wonder if people have ever considered being less self absorbed as a means toward happiness. [&o] M

RosesHaveThorns -> RE: Erasing Ethnicity (10/27/2007 10:44:36 PM)

I find this practice more disturbing because of the implied racism. Someone out there finds it more attractive to become "white" then what they are naturally, and finds diversity and difference to be abhorrent enough to fork over the cash to change that.

And that one is hired because of physical looks, not ability is horrendous. Why not choose on merit and ability to get the job they are hired for done?

And considering that these people often do it to get a job, and Korean Pop Stars often get the sugery to appeal to fans from what I have heard, I doubt it's for the person getting the surgery.

Wouldn't it be nicer to be appreciated for who you are now, flaws included then to take the risks and give up the money to be flawless?

Through, in a related article, MSN states: "80% of Koreans in their 20s lighten their hair." Well of course they will, how do you dye your hair darker then black? And most people have to bleach their hair and then apply color. It only applies if they dye their hair blonde or brown, really.

And of course, one of the ads on this is a weight loss add with a computer generated model. How appropriate!

Ethnicity is a cultural construct and this is just another sign of western me, me, me, wannabe, wannabe consumer culture. Its a sad indictment of the culture we have created for ourselves. It's shallow, vain and self obsessed. Such women are best avoided at all costs. Apart from that it is difficult to think how one could interact with such self absorbed people.

They better be careful or they'll end up looking like Michael Jackson and he had some of the best plastic surgeons in the world.

Invictus754 -> RE: Erasing Ethnicity (10/28/2007 8:10:19 AM)

We have millions of years of selection imprinted into our brains making us choose the best looking mate (as well as 50 years of TV ads telling us what is "best looking").  Until we stop watching TV, women in general will be brainwashed into thinking that Britney Spears is a good looking blonde and women have to be a size six or less and 22 years old to be attractive.

But, for all these women lashing out at the horrible society that makes women mutilate their bodies in response to social pressure, the same type of pressures are on men.  We have to be buff and tan, brainy and tenured or a business success and rich (a combination of all three is best) if we want to have the life that we want.

Funny that the sponser to the article was Marie Claire, with an ad to buy the magazine on every short article page.

Actually, you really wanted to say "I wish there WERE an answer" because you are implying there is no answer, so the verb has to be in the subjunctive.

I wish I could argue with that last post but agree with it completely. Aurthor C. Clarke once said along time ago that the internet would unite the world as one..........somehow I don't think this is what he expected.

Was not Marylin Monroe a size 14? She is idolized now, but if her career was to start now and no one knew her she would be call fat and told to change.

In studying Celtic believes they would say the only thing that is perfect was God. To emphasize that in their Celtic scroll work they would deliberately put a mark in the scroll work so there would be a flaw.

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: Erasing Ethnicity (10/28/2007 9:20:37 AM)

first of all, Sophia, calm down! it was nice rant however you failed to see logic of Lotus' op. you posed the question, if i had flaws would i correct them - my answer would be NO. those flaws were created/designed for a reason - to be unique and slightly different from the rest of the human race ...something that would make me as the one and only me.

Lotus, i agree - there are too many out there correcting what i would call "God's mistakes" in order to be perfection in their eyes.  however they forget one thing, they cannot take it with them when they die - all that plastic and fake boobs does ugly things to your body after you're deceased.

popeye1250 -> RE: Erasing Ethnicity (10/28/2007 10:37:45 AM)

The News Magazine show "60 Minutes" did an article some years back about how so many young Japanese women were having surgery on their eyes to have them "Westernized."
They just came to the conclusion that they liked "bigger" eyes.
And a few years back in Hollywood it seemed all the moviestarlets were dying their hair red to get that, "Irish" look.
A lot of this stuff has to do with fads I think.

oreogirl -> RE: Erasing Ethnicity (10/28/2007 10:41:13 AM)

I read this article last night, and all I could think was, "you've got to be kidding?"  Why in the hell would I want to look like someone else?  I've got NATURALLY thick licks, a natural chocolatey tan, huge breasts, hips and an ass that don't need padding, and despite being overweight I have a relatively hourglass shape!!!  Why the hell do I need surgery to get what other women are paying thousands of dollars to have done so they can look like me?  No Botox, silicone breasts, ass padding, or any other type of cosmetic surgery here!!!!  Other than to correct some type of  disfigurement, is cosmetic surgery really necessary?  I say be happy with how you look because you are a unique individual with your own style.

Every time I read your posts on well.. anything I think you and Rush Limbaugh must be long lost seperated twins.. Egads.

Due to Western influance they are mutilating thier bodies. Potentialy harming themselves for the rest of thier lives. They have actualy taken what was thier standard of beauty for thier ethnicity.. tossed it out.. and began incorporating the West's version. Due to genetics it is damaging because they have to reshape, and deform thier own natural beauty to do so. So obsessed with the West they have become that they even base earning ability on it.. You do not find this warped? but right.. and a womans right to mutilate herself to achive some foreign standard of beauty fostered on them by media?

Hell I do not think it is right for the media to push the unhealthy and often unachievable standards of American beauty on us.. little alone to people who are not geneticaly predisposed to be able to even attempt it with out breaking and resetting bones.

Damn you are more daft then I previously thought.

You must be the reason why Pink made the Video "Stupid Girls"

Gwyn,
Disease's growing, it's epidemic
I'm scared that there ain't a cure
The world believes it and I'm going crazy
I cannot take any more
I'm so glad that I'll never fit in
That will never be me
Outcasts and girls with ambition
That's what I wanna see
Disasters all around
World despaired
Their only concern
Will they **** up my hair

Asides from modeling, acting or any other job where my appearence clearly effected my preformance, I really don't think I would want to succeed because of plastic surgery. It would be like sleeping my way to the top - just not a career path I'm interested in. I might joke about it, but it wouldn't be something actually do.

I don't think there is anything wrong with plastic surgery, but I really don't think it's all that great. It leaves scars and if it goes wrong you look so much worse than you did before (kiss that appearence-based promotion good-bye). Some women definately take it too far and they just look awful.

I also just have a really hard time seeing ethnicity as a flaw that needs to be fixed.

Termyn8or -> RE: Erasing Ethnicity (10/28/2007 2:13:14 PM)

You mean that cute blonde surfer girl could be an Asian spy or something ?

Seriously though, I am not into anyone who is fake. And I don't even see why Orientals would want to hide their features, there is quite a contingent of Men who prefer that.

For example, just to have a chance to get lewd today :-) I like red hair. I mean that red that almost looks like ketchup. I do not mean orange, I mean RED. It is a personal preference that is all. But I want the carpet to match the drapes.

If you are not red, then so there is one little thing I have to do without. If the rest of you is worth it, OK. The hair color is not a deal breaker. But if I see what I get, I want to get what I see.

Oriental Women never turned me on, but a couple of my friends are highly into them. I mean they like everything about them. I don't. There is a difference between the subserviance in them and a "normal" bottom, sub or slave. I do not like it. I want a full growed Woman in front of me in the morning when I go to work. At night, it is a different story. And this has to do with attitudes, not looks.

People care about looks too much.

LotusSong -> RE: Erasing Ethnicity (10/28/2007 4:43:52 PM)

What struck me most in this article was the procedures I never knew were going on to create something I already have and hate.

For example- if I had to pick a perfect body for myself, it would be a Japanese woman.  I love the blue black hair and their petiteness.  To see some women there long for slender calves, more height and lighter hair was like asking someone to paint a mustache on the Mona Lisa to me!

White women plump their lips and implant their buttocks to get some booty.
Black women straighten their hair, lighten it, thin their lips and wear colored contacts.
Asian women do calf reduction surgery and lengthen their legs with bone stretching surgery
The old want to look younger, the young want to look older, the fat want to look thinner, the skinny want to look fatter.

There will always someone thinking that maybe you aren't as pretty as you can be (like they are the grand poobah of who determines what is right and wrong)  The chances are your critic will be no fashion plate him/herself.

The bottom line is.. somewhere in the world, you are someone's ideal of beauty just as you are.  Love yourself.   If you make a cosmetic correction..do it FOR YOURSELF.  People come and go in our life and they all have opinions.  To change to meet another's idea of "perfection" is foolish as yet another will come with theirs.

I suggest that if someone says "you know you would look better if _______ or that you could get this job if ______"  Thank them for their opinion,. save your money and go out for a hot fudge sundae.
