Status: offline 		You see the same sort of bashing and snarkiness in science fiction fandom, in various religions, and in politics. No human community is safe from it. The trick has always been to filter, and chose your friends carefully. The thing that annoys me, more than anything else, is how the vast majority of people disrespect others without first coming up with a rational reason for thinking the way they do. I am someone with very strongly held opinions about certain subjects. I am vocal about these opinions, when I am either asked, or provoked into doing so. I guess I'm one of these "assholes" of which this thread speaks. But I'm unaplologetic about it.  I hold myself to a standard. Don't you agree that the following are good things to be against?

Racisim
Sexisim
Intollerance of GLBT's
People deliberately misrepresenting themselves.
Lack of compassion.
Solving problems with violence
People spreading "the one true way"
Cults based on false premises.

I try to work for a better world, one where everyone has the right and opportunity to express themselves and their sexuality as they see fit. I also feel that we have a duty to speak out against anything that promotes these negative, outdated ideas. This is why I supported the work to change of the DSM, why I worked my ass off against Colorado's 1992 "Ammendment #2" after it passed, why I helped with the overturning of Arkansas' anti-sodomy laws, starting BDSM support groups where I can, and I try to pass on as much good information to new folk as I can. Either in person, f2f, or via financial support of causes I believe in.

"Sit down, shut up, or get out...." God, I've heard that refrain so many times, it's become the anthem of my life... The anthem of the gadfly.

To be honest, I'd thought that too. And I'm still taken aback by some threads. It's one thing to disagree, quite another to pummel one another.

Its like that in most forums.

Its not enough to say 'I don't agree with your point' for some reason on forums people tend to turn into an angry mob over the smallest, impersonal comments.

It wouldn't be so bad if it was a personal attack but normal its a general comment that seems to affend so much.

Its a shame we cant just all get along

I suspect that (a) the comparative anonymity of Internet positng and (b) the lack of face-to-face contact allow/inspire some folks to be snarkier than they might be otherwise.

Technical note: I didn't actually say the "angry mob" sentence attributed to me, so I'm not sure why it's showing up in my quote.

Actually it's rather easy to interpret things on the net wrong as well....in fact, one could imply from this statement by you that you are screaming at latexbaby (which, trust me would fall on deaf ears), however, you probably aren't.  That seems to happen quite a bit here.

Status: offline 		A comment on those who are shocked at what happens on the forums...you are forgetting that aside from anything else, the forums are a form of entertainment, so often threads are started simply for drama, humor and many replies mirror that, even the angry, snarky ones are entertaining, if witty enough.

To come to the forums seeking help, understanding or sympathy is really asking for alot of internet strangers. Take whatever is said in stride, you will most likely never meet these people, and again, no one said the people in the lifestyle need to more tolerant or less judgemental than any other human on the planet.
