LOS ANGELES (AP) - Federal agents joined the search for evidence Wednesday in brush-covered Orange County hills where an arsonist is believed to have ignited one of the wildfires devastating Southern California.
In San Bernardino County, a man suspected of starting a small fire was arrested and another man was shot to death by police after he fled officers who approached to see if he might be trying to set a fire.
Wildfires, burning in seven counties, had destroyed about 1,500 homes and caused more than a half-million people to flee since the first blaze began late Saturday. At least two - in Orange and Riverside counties - have been linked to arson.

I'm sure it's all being caused by Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction.

You guys have to be kidding me...of course these fires were started on purpose. Stupid people do stupid things, they were probably trying to get a meth lab going and were getting a heat source ready when the Santa Ana winds came by and lit some Chapparal on fire and once that stuff starts there's not stopping it with how low the RH is coming down off the high desert. Of course the guy is going to run from the cops if he just lit a fire that is going to cost millions if not billions of dollars to fight. 8000+ firemen aren't easy to pay for. I don't know if the CFD is the same as the rest of the country but they will be paying for some of this fire out of their own pockets...well the one that didn't get shot will be anyway.

If you read the article the man was shot after he began ramming the officers vehicle with his own.  You use a car as a weopon, you get shot.

One guy in custody and another is being investigated and one shot.. not bad.  Still a LOT of people are losing their homes and are being evacuated.  Can you honestly say that you are surprised that someone started any of these fires?? Their are people out there who do not have ethics or morals and who think its 'fun' to play with fire and do this, regardless of the consequences.

I still recall the fire a few years back that was started by a Forestry Service worker who didn't have enough to do and wanted to be a hero. No surprise that one of the fires was deliberate when you take that into consideration. Every year there is at least one or two big fires that were arson related.

This year though it seems most of the fires were caused by old power lines breaking in the high winds and then sparking off fires as they came into contact with the ground.

Have Rope I remember that as him being a seasonal fire fighter, and wanting to get some work close to home.  Not actually in the US forest service.

The article also mentions looting...

There are always a few arson fires mixed in with all the naturally caused wildfires in dry years in Southern Cali.

But don't misunderstand most of these fires are entirely natural. Chapparal is an ecosystem  that has evolved to include fire as a vital part of the ecosystem. As long as high temp, low humidity and high wind combine with the dense chapparal brush fires will happen.

I'm guessing that it didn't evolve to include people.

If a police officer with a gun says stop or I’ll shoot…I’d stop… If I kept running I would need to be shot because I would be too stupid to live. If I decided to ram a few police cars to get away then I am committing suicide.

Now that all this publicity is being sent around the world I’m sure a few terrorist organizations are now making plans to start mass fires.

Hi folks--

If all y'all check out: http://www.fire.ca.gov/ , you'll see which fires were suspect and which were accidental (transformer explosions, wires arcing, structure fires).

If memory serves, a fire last year that killed 5 fire-fighters was set by an arsonist.  He's facing the death penalty.

"In the city of San Bernardino, police shot and killed a man who fled when officers approached to see if he might be trying to set a fire. The man, whose name was not released, was shot Tuesday night following a chase that ended when he backed his car into a police cruiser and an officer opened fire, San Bernardino police said."

yeh well thats self defense auto, after all we dont want any dead fucking cars laying around, denting a cop car is an execution offense!

Dont even think abou ttelling me it was a weapon unless you have 5 point video and god as a witness.

It is absolutly an execution offense to ram a cop car while they are pursuing you.

"when he backed his car into a police cruiser"

RAM?

Thats a lucky translation right!

There is nothing in that article that would indicate the officers oir anyones life was in "DANGER"!

Backing into a police car even during a pusuit is not an executionable offense.

PLONK!
