A bit?!

One of Tony Benn's well-known comments on the political process:

I retired from the Houses of Parliament to concentrate on politics.

'Problem with Tony Benn is, there aren't enough like him.

Tony Benn is great because he knows what he believes, sticks to what he believes, speaks what he believes and acts on it.

Compare this to most politicians, who believe nothing, change their position with the latest poll and speak whatever spiel their party PR and focus groups have told them to and show us no evidence whatever of having acted on it (how could they?)

Even if one doesnt agree with what he says, one ought to respect his integrity in saying it.

Tony Benn is the left's Ron Paul. You don't have to agree with him but he does have integrity.

I have a lot of time for him. He says it like it is although i dont always agree. The quote of his below is spot on in my opinion.

"As a minister, I experienced the power of industrialists and bankers to get their way by use of the crudest form of economic pressure, even blackmail, against a Labour Government. Compared to this, the pressure brought to bear in industrial disputes is minuscule. This power was revealed even more clearly in 1976 when the IMF secured cuts in our public expenditure. These lessons led me to the conclusion that the UK is only superficially governed by MPs and the voters who elect them. Parliamentary democracy is, in truth, little more than a means of securing a periodical change in the management team, which is then allowed to preside over a system that remains in essence intact. If the British people were ever to ask themselves what power they truly enjoyed under our political system they would be amazed to discover how little it is, and some new Chartist agitation might be born and might quickly gather momentum"

There is a wiki page about him.

Edited for spelling

First I agree that Benn probably is a man of integrity,. he also is a waffler supreme and  an outrageous idealist who claims to admire the common man to a quite ludicrous and probably selfserving degree. ie he is a bit of a demagogue.
His left wing antics also ensured that the Labour Party was unelectable for about 15/20 years until guess who.... Tony Blair came on the scene.

The quote above is revealing in that the UK was having a major financial crisis in 1976 and the pound was starting to fall thru' the floor hence the need for an international loan which  was obtained....with strings.

adding: to juxtapose the social/political conditions of the 1850s with the late 20th century in the UK is a perfect example of his "waffle"
I refer to his expectation of a new Chartist movement if only the masses knew how parliamentary democracy really worked.

a bit more: Politesub I think you are in need of a right wing domme with a big arse and boobs to knock some sense into you lol
If you like 'em slim then thats OK too, as long as she is right wing.

Seeks my old mate, its nice of you to suggest a right wing Domme for me. As for body shape, im not over fussed, as long as her belly is smaller than mine. That said, i have no idea where you get the idea i am left wing. i consider myself just right of center, playing down the middle like Lampard, occasionally darting right or left to avoid incoming tackles from yourself and NG.

Getting back to Benn, he did himself no favours trying to get a no vote for the EU referendum in the 70`s, i think the more exasperated he got, the further left he lurched. Have a quick look at any of the top names in the Labour party and many had similar ideals to Benn.

Benns Granddaughter hopes to stand at the next election for a seat in West Sussex so good luck to her.

similar ideals to Benn.

Benn's ideals are this: he believes equality, freedom and prosperity are intimately linked and mutually supportive. All the rest is small beer and spin from those who like to deal in labels and mud-slinging.

Problem with Benn, apart from there not being enough like him, is that he's ahead of his time.

Glad you got the joke PoliteSub but to me you come across as a left winger.

I actually did vote NO in the referendum and funnily enough it was an American commentator who made up my mind David or Don Macneil something like that. He came fom NBC. Definitely a Yank I dont mean the Canadian reporter whose name was similar.

Macneil did  a big report on Panorama. Everything he said came true. For example it would prove impossible to improve the Common Agricultural Policy, the UK would run a massive trade and monetary deficit with Europe. and could be expected to cede ever increasing Political control to Europe.

This is the actual man Robert Macneil. Excellent reporter IMO
