As he prepares to ask for $190 billion to fund the war in Iraq, President Bush refuses to approve an extra half-billion dollars that help one in four American households pay skyrocketing home-heating bills this winter.

The debate illustrates what critics say are Bush's out-of-wack spending priorities, after he vetoed a popular measure that would have expanded healthcare available to poor children.

"No money for kids' health insurance, no money to help poor families pay their heating bills but President Bush wants $190 billion additional for 2008 for his wars in Iraq and Afghanistan," CNN commentator Jack Cafferty said Monday. "Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says the president's new request means the cost of Iraq war is now approaching $650 billion. I wonder if the Democrats will give him the money."

Status: offline 		The whole nutshow would be easier to swallow if CEO pay wasnt so obsceen.  In 1984, the CEO at the place I worked was only allowed 168x the wage of the lowest paid worker. At the time that seemed high.

The other thing is all the lawyers who change the rules half way into the game.

I dont see much of a future here. The greed is so pervasive it leaves a scar.

Status: offline 		The thing that amazes me is that the people who are so horrified by this war spending are unwilling to actively support a viable presidential candidate who would save the TRILLIONS wasted on our aggressive military escapades throughout the world, ending the choke-hold the military-industrial complex has on our government. 
Some people are just born to whine rather than act decisively.

Status: offline 		It is going to be a rough winter for some people living in the great white northern areas, so far it has been unnaturally warm but that won't last forever. Oops global warming.. so it may last! [jk, it isn't going that fast lol]

Since I've gotten divorced I have become all too familiar with the topic here. Sometime this winter, just like last winter, I am going to be faced with that choice.
Qualifiying for assistance is pretty much fruitless even though I can't work, Michigan is broke and I don't fit their guidelines anymore. For those that do qualify I hope there is enough help for them.

I use LP gas to heat my house. It is a 500 gallon tank and the current price is $1.83 per gallon, even keeping my thermostat at 62 I go through a minimum of 4 tanks per winter. I do supplement with as much firewood as I can & that helps a lot! [anyone up for chopping wood? lol]

Sleeping with the dog helps, an electric blanket is a beautiful thang & I have a bunch of old fashioned water bottles to tuck between the sheets. Those really do work!

It makes me thankful that I don't have kids to worry about. I don't have to care for an elderly parent or make sure anyone else is warm enough. Yeah I need help but... there are a lot of people with kidlets or elders and they're the ones that are really stuck.

If you can please donate gently used coats for kids, knit a blanket for a family. It makes a difference in someones world, and isn't this all just one world anyway?

Not to be a downer here but there has been a definite medical connection between use of electric blankets and cancer. The recommended use for one now is to use it to preheat the bed (then leave it off for sleep) and use additional normal blankets to keep the warmth in. Also the combination of an electric blanket turned on and water bottles in the bed is probably not wise unless you are very into electro-stimulus play.

Now for the good news, I just saw a NOAA winter outlook the other day that has MI as warmer than usual for the winter so maybe you won't need as much heat as in the past. Hopefully that means even with the increase in cost of fuel your bills won't be much more than before.

Even if they don't.. he'll override it with a veto and of course it's the REPUBLICANS will be the responsible ones for not providing enough of THEIR votes against it.

Status: offline 		Well, the actual job of the federal government is money, wars and the border.  It's not part of the federal job description to pay for insurance, heating, education or food.

Status: offline 		sad that we've forgotten the US has a standard that's set for Americans to live above a certain level. There are entitlement programs for just that.  I guess we'll change those laws as well.

In my opinion, we're headed to living on the same level as the chinese industrial/farm workers. IE more than one generation under one roof. Shall we do away with Social security to hasten our decline? Im pretty sure theres a debate raging on that as well.

Status: offline 		Even the poorest people I know have enough food, water, heat and several televisions. And I'd fit in the lower middle class.

I don't think anyone here goes hungry do they?  Otherwise, wouldn't your internet connection go first, before you quit heating your home or buying cereal?

Gee, wouldn't a reasonable person think they already had that stuff already?
I suppose NONE of that money will be going to the contractors over there to build bridges while our bridges collapse.
And, buried in that bill is $714M for "peacekeeping operations in Darfur!" Now, US Taxpayers have to pay for that crap while they freeze to death this winter?
I wonder which companies will be making $millions off of that boondoggle?
Everything for everyone else and nothing for the American People.
And, the 47 million un-insured in this country are paying their taxdollars to build hospitals in foreign countries!
And, three weeks ago the Congress passed a $34.6B foreign aid Bill which is up by 290% from ten years ago!
That while disabled veterans pensions have lost spending power in the last 10 years of 35% in "real" inflation numbers, not the phoney COLA numbers that the govt uses.
A good Detective always, "follows the money."
There are too many companies, corporations and individuals making too much $money$ from the Iraq war, foreign aid, "peacekeeping missions" and the like!
PaHunk is right, those entities have no bounds when it comes to GREED at the U.S. Taxpayer trough!
Meanwhile Veterans and the poor who need heating assistance get left behind.
Time to call the Congressman and Senators again and I hope you all will too!
It is time that *our government* start taking care of *our people*

P.S. This stuff is why I'm against *any* foreign aid!
The businesses who hire the "K" street lobbyists that want it show a few "starving children ads" as they call them and then it's off to the $pig$ trough of Taxpayer dollars for them!
The Mercedes Benz corporation also hires "K" street lobbyists so that the money keeps flowing overseas so that they can keep selling their vehicles to foreign govts and despots who couldn't afford them on their own. And were talking about hundreds of thousands of vehicles!
And the people who'll have no heat this winter are helping to pay for that!
The corruption in these "foreign aid" programs is simply astounding!

There is a debate ongoing about fixing Social Security, before our entire economic system collapses.
