PORT ALLEN, La. - With a councilman saying underwear "is called underwear for a reason," another Cajun-country town has banned saggy pants from its streets.
The ordinance, passed unanimously Monday by the Port Allen City Council, requires pants to be secured at the waist so they do not fall below the hips, expose underwear or create indecent exposure.Violators could be fined $25 to $250 for a first offense, and $250 to $500 for repeat offenses.
Council member Ray Helen Lawrence said she voted for the ordinance only because she got numerous calls from constituents who consider the look a fashion faux pas. Many said they associate droopy outerwear with crime, she said.

so does this mean that there really is a fashion policce because they voted for it to be illegal to wear droopy pants because some people think its a fashion mistake?

the umderlying reason is in the article.......criminal association. on the other hand....move to Southampton....we already have such boners as: no clotheslines visible from the street, no neon lighting on businesses and no fences higher than 4 feet on property lines.

sharainks -> RE: fashion police . . . (10/24/2007 4:09:18 AM)

I'll admit that I don't like the underwear peeking out from the pants thing.  However, many places are starting to come down on "gang" clothing.

The thing is when does this type of thing stop?  Clothing tends to be a personal statement.  When a handful of people make decisions for everyone about things like clothing, perfume,  etc when does it stop?   It seems to be the new trend for people to make other's decisions for them  just because they feel like it  and don't like what someone else is doing.

Why is it their business?  Why are they so personally invested in what someone else does?  Why is this being encouraged?

Honestly I cant see that law standing up as constitutional if the history behind it clearly states an unworkable, variable, subjective reason.  Someone go wear some bad pants there and let's see [8D]

Men get to run around topless, now if a woman does that  well she may end up in jail. ~laughs~
Plus a woman's cleavage typically has far less hair than a mans.

Blessed Be,
Nika

GhitaAmati -> RE: fashion police . . . (10/24/2007 6:07:15 AM)

Ya know...I really truly HATE the baggy pants look. I mean really, and it makes absolutly NO sense at all in my mind to associate it with crime, although I know it is, but if you think about it, why in the hell, would someone who KNOWS they are very likely to need to be able to start running at a moments notice from a police officer, wear clothing that compleatly inhibits their ability to run?

Anyway, yes..I truly hate the look, and I flat out do NOT allow the boys in my cub scout pack to dress that way. It is in most of the school dress codes anymore that pants have to be secured at the waist, and that I agree with, but Im not sure I agree with making laws to dictate what someone can and cant wear. Although I know many places down here in Florida have outlawed thong and string bikinis...and well...trust me, it was a good thing cause some of those women walking around...REALLY needed to put on more clothing...but..anyway, Im just not sure it can be considered constitutional.....

laurell3 -> RE: fashion police . . . (10/24/2007 6:10:22 AM)

geez while we're at it, I'm sure alot of men will agree that women over a certain age without a certain figure should NOT be allowed to wear tight pants...let's lock them all up too!  Most of my collegues should be locked up for the stuff they wear everyday, make room in the cells, there's going to be alot more people coming in.

See my point? Where do we draw the line?  Who decides whether it's today's fashion or faux pas?
How the hell could this law possibly stand give the lack of any sort of due process or notice that one is comitting a crime?
