Severe drought conditions are enveloping the southeast US. There is only 69 days of water left in Durham, North Carolina...

Yet the International Hockey Federation insists that astroturf be watered before a game of field hockey. So Duke and the University of North Carolina are soaking their fields.

"Sprinklers aren't even the right term, they're like fire hoses," Brad Schnurr said, a contractor in Durham. "I was like, 'What is that? What is that?' I couldn't believe it."
The International Hockey Federation requires the college teams to saturate the synthetic turfs before each practice and all games.
It's not just the way the ball bounces, athletics officials say, although field hockey balls do bounce better on saturated fields. When the turf is wet, coaches add, field hockey players have better grip on the surface and report fewer injuries.

Cyber,

It has long been common to wet down Astroturf before playing on it. This is because it has a fairly high coefficient of friction when dry and pretty quickly after it was adopted players found they were getting skin burn, sprains, and even broken bones that just never happened on real turf. It was discovered that wetting it down mitigates the injuries.

If indeed the drought situation is serious...if in fact water is needed to live.. if drinking water is needed= then looks like the hard choice has been chosen.

Brings an entirely new meaning to carpet lickers, seems to me.

What... the hell.

I used to play field hockey on dry turf. It's not that hard. Just move the games to a real field where you can play dry.

Aquatic,

Real turf has to be watered every day, Astorturf only needs watering down on game day. In that sense it is considerably more water efficient than real turf. In light of the water shortage in the South maybe they could find a substitute for water, possibly something like salad oil.
