Status: offline 		CUMMING, Georgia - With water supplies rapidly shrinking during a drought of historic proportions, Gov. Sonny Perdue declared a state of emergency Saturday for the northern third of the state of Georgia and asked President Bush to declare it a major disaster area.

Georgia officials warn that Lake Lanier, a 38,000-acre reservoir that supplies more than 3 million residents with water, is less than three months from depletion. Smaller reservoirs are dropping even lower.

Perdue asked the president to exempt Georgia from complying with federal regulations that dictate the amount of water released from Georgia's reservoirs to protect federally protected mussel species downstream.

Status: offline 		im tellin ya Level, its a muckin fess......ive lived here all my life and never seen such drought as we have this year.....

i hate it for the mussels, but fact is, the people need drinking water....

were practicing the "if its yellow let it mellow" thing about flushing the toilet here.......doing all we can......

they have even made the ritzy neighborhoods to quit watering their sod.....my gawd the injustice.....

Status: offline 		fla and alabama......the govenor is going to sue the corp of engineers....and they just now showed on the news where these pumps that you can put in your bath tub to recycle bath water are selling out at home depot......

theres a water tower near me that has a gauge on the side-numbers from 1-100 i think it is......normally, it has stayed about half full or more-all my life....yesterday i drove by it and it was under the 5 mark......

we need RAIN!!!!

Status: offline 		Heh. Fast forward to australia. The driest inhaibited island in the world. Look at south australia, the driest state in the nation.

Droughts here happen most summers- the town i live in has some 320-odd cloudfree days a year.

At the moment, we're stuck in what's pretty much a nationwide drought, it's been going for a couple of years now (or feels like it). Farmers everywhere are going broke as the crops die, and these are farms that've been going for generations. Statewide, you're allowed to water your garden for three hours a week, in the evening, with a dripper system or a bucket.

And you know what? The steelworks here still uses 65Kl of water every 15 minutes of every day as part of one of its processes- it quenches baked coal. Then there's the water trucks that cruise around, keeping the dust down on site. Then there's the other processes that all use water, too.

How is it that industry can do that sorta stuff, and get away with it?

Anyway, if anyone's got any virgins to spare, send a couple down here. The aussie ones are too pretty to sacrifice ;)

Wait...

Wasn't global warming supposed to INCREASE hurricane activity?  Silly Global warming! Go Sonny Go! It's about time somebody stood up to silly and stupid environment regulations. BTW... The good news is.... The United States of America sits onto of the greatest systems of aquifers known on the planet. It provides it with the best and most plentiful drinking water in the world and it is not going anywhere.

Status: offline 		We in Alabama are getting some of that water, but trust me, it's no better here.  We had a small bit of rain the last two days, and wish for at least 10 days of solid rain.

All right, everybody from the area stop laughing now. Drilling for water in North and Central Georgia south of the appalachian foothills is nearly impossible. There is a big sheet of granite underlying the area and you have to drill very deep into/through the granite to get significant water. The small suburban town I grew up in used well water for a while but as it was growing they had to build a water treatment plant to start pumping from a river that ran through town as the local wells could not sustain the growth rate and more wells weren't feasible.

The drought is awful and I hope some rain comes in soon but it really does point up an important fact, most of the Atlanta area relies on Lake Lanier for drinking water and with the way the area has grown the lake is going to reach pumping capacity even in wet times pretty soon.

Hoepfully Sonny and the state legislature will stop worrying about the required pumping, which if stopped will do a lot of damage downstream beyond killing off the endangered mussels and start looking at some ways to either get more water from out of the area, maybe from the Savanah River and the big Corps of Engineers lake up on the GA/SC border, as well as to start planning and perhaps limiting the growth in the area. How much longer can the commute get on GA 400 get before its simply impossible to get from one end to other?

Status: offline 		Last I heard they need a lot of rain, like a hurricane remnant stalling out over N. Georgia, to end this drought quickly. Although I sure hope it does rain down there soon. My brothers are talking about coming up to visit if the water runs out. My new cat and my new pet might not like such a crowded house.

Status: offline 		I was in Georgia for a few days just a couple of weeks ago.  Knowing of their drought situation, I arrived with my own case of bottled water, kept in my car, because I was hearing how bad it was there.

I was really surprised to see all the fountains on Broad Street in Augusta fully flowing, and more fountains in Atlanta flowing nicely as well.  I remember during bad drought spells in California, you didn't see a drop of wasted water anywhere, and if you did, you reported it.  You had to ask for a glass of water in restaurants, and all sorts of precautions were taken to save and ration water.

So why are all the fountains still flowing?  Water was free flowing at every restaurant I enjoyed, and it seemed that no one around me seemed very concerned.  What gives?

Actually no. Like all sceptics you refuse to listen and use your head. The theory is that there will be MORE EXTREMES of weather, like MORE POWERFUL hurricanes and DROUGHT.
