phoenixinchains -> if you could live during any time... (10/19/2007 5:48:34 AM)

this morning i am currently roasting a chicken. apon baisting it i noticed tiny quills stuck in the wing tips. so i got to thinking.
i think  a lot of people have a romantic idea of "when" they'd like to live, but do many people think beyond the romance?
when would you like to live? what are the considerations, pro's, and con's?

The future, hopefully when all the craziness about lets hate or enslave this person merely because of their gender, race, religion (you get the idea) is all over with. I'd like to live in a time where humans are more advanced and the world is a (hopefully) safer, cleaner place to live. I'd like to travel out into space and see other planets. So for me it would be far into the future.

Ideally, I think born in the mid 1940s for me.

Still around now, and having lived through the most prosperous and peaceful period in European history, sitting on a decent pension, lived a good life with more than enough fun etc

I wish I could say the same for me now and my offspring, but I cant see it working out that way for me or for them.

It's always tempting to romanticize the past -- should one be a dashing knight back during the Age of Chivalry?  Or maybe witness the Roaring Twenties?  What about the Victorian Era, or the glory days of Rome, or feudal Japan?  I bet you could find people who'd appreciate living in any of those eras... until they had to deal with a complete lack of science, decent medical care, sanitation, modern morality, or any one of a hundred different hard-won bits of progress.  It'd also be easy to fantasize about some wonderful science-fiction-derived future, where disease and war have been overcome and humanity's bounding around the cosmos merrily making friends with whatever critters are out there.  Assuming, of course, that the future's going to get better, not progressively worse...

Hey, I'm a cynic, what can I say?

I think I'm satisfied living in the present -- sure, there's all kinds of trouble right at the moment, but that's nothing new at all.  But if you really, really pushed me to name just one other era I'd want to exist in, I'd say Athens at the time of Plato, so I could sit and debate with both he and some of his contemporaries.

I'd like to live between 6:00 PM and Midnight. I come home, hug my naked slave, enjoy the perfect Bombay Sapphire Martini and the 'nosh' she has waiting and we head out to the deck and watch the sun go down over the ocean. Then we have a nice dinner, perhaps play in the dungeon, and end the night sipping a nice wine while relaxing in the hot tub before retiring for the night.

I used to like to live from 10:00PM to dawn to watch the sun come up over the ocean the next day, but I'm getting too old for that and live on the other coast now.

I'd like to live about a week ago. Then I could bet on all the sports games of which I already knew the outcome of and make a killing![:D]

I’d like to live before the modern era of mobile phone communication when you couldn’t be tracked through every stage of your life. It wasn’t that long ago that’s the scary thing and I can remember it.

The Age of Pericles in Athens 490 - so I could see the Parthenon as it truly was...and know how to interpret it...and I could see the Erecthion and the Propylaia and the Temple of Zeus at Olympia and the Victory at Samothrace...and the battle at Thermopylae...

And yes...I am a geek.
