This question was inspired by the "dress dominantly without looking like an idiot thread." I didn't want to hijack.

What is a steampunk?

From Wikipedia: (personally it didn't clear it up for me lol)
Steampunk is a subgenre of fantasy and speculative fiction which came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often set in Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date. Other examples of steampunk contain alternate history–style presentations of "the path not taken" of such technology as dirigibles or analog computers; these frequently are presented in an idealized light, or a presumption of functionality. It is often associated with cyberpunk and shares a similar fanbase and theme of rebellion, but developed as a separate movement (though both have considerable influence on each other). Apart from time period and level of technological development, the main difference between cyberpunk and steampunk is that steampunk settings usually tend to be less obviously dystopian than cyberpunk, or lack dystopian elements entirely.

There was me thinking it could be a type of outdated music.

I've not been able to figure out the clothing fashion bit of it, but it makes me think of well-cut velvet jackets on men.

Thanks, Camille.

I actually posted because wiki made so very little sense to me.

It was being discussed as a style of dress (involving suspenders?). I'm clearly missing something...but, then, I've never been one of the cool kids.

Is it kind of a modified Victorian look?

topcat -> RE: Random question (10/14/2007 12:17:40 PM)

I'd say more an edwardian look, actually- add a coal fired mahgony cased laptop with brass trim, a set of drigible racing googles and a hand cranked cellphone made of enamled tin, and you have it...

dunno, but it is the new name for my um when he gets out of his 4 hour shower!

petdave -> RE: Random question (10/15/2007 5:45:15 AM)

Hm, i've always thought of it as strictly a literary theme... and in the works i've read, very little attention has generally been given to fashion... it's more about where technology would have ended up without the advent of electronics, and how that would effect culture.

...read 'The Difference Engine' by William Gibson.........

Hot.

Erm, that probably doesn't help much. To be honest, I have only heard this word being flung around recently in regards to fashion. From what I can understand, as a style, A) evolving and B) can go a couple different paths.

Going with the Victorian roots... I kind of think of Johnny Depp as Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow. Kind of your typical, slim line Victorian chic... and lots of gadgets.

Then, of course, there is the more cyberpunk bent... where you are steampunk. Think attaching lots of probably incredibly uncomfortable stuff to your clothing (or your body directly with some latex ingenuity...) to simulate some sort of cybernetic attachment (wires, hoses, tubing, pipes...).
