JERUSALEM - Senior Israeli officials expressed support Monday for the transfer of Arab parts of Jerusalem to Palestinian control, offering a concession on one of the most contentious issues in the conflict. The offer appeared to fall short of Palestinian calls for a full Israeli withdrawal from key areas of the holy city.

The officials spoke as Israeli and Palestinian negotiators were to begin talks in Jerusalem to work out a joint document they hope to issue at a U.S.-sponsored peace conference next month. The meetings were closed.

Ahead of the talks, Vice Premier Haim Ramon said he proposed in recent talks with Palestinian officials to turn over areas of east Jerusalem to the Palestinians. The Palestinians claim east Jerusalem, which Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast war, as the capital of a future independent state.

No consession Israel will ever give can be enough. They don't want peace with israel. They want it off the map.

Compromise is good. Make everyone reasonably happy and end the conflict at last.

Will it work? Who can say?

I'd really like to see it but I dont understand how. Welll see I guess.

Some will be satisfied with nothing less than "no Israel". But, I hope that number is small enough, that the Palestinian people want peace strongly enough, to find a way to make it work.

Israel has been perfectly OK with sharing Jerusalem.

It is the muslims who claim they have a right to have it all.

Not all Jews are okay with it, and not all Muslims want it all. [8|] Perhaps more Muslims have made such a transistion unworkable, so far, but a lot of Muslims have reason to be pissed over there. A gentle, yet firm, pushing of both parties into a peaceful direction, that's what I hope for.

The Palestinians had over half of it( as well as every inch of Gaza, West Bank and Golan), and choose war,  Hopefully they have changed, but based on their leadership, I doubt it.

Yeah, a lot of their "leaders" leave a lot to be desired. But, maybe the masses are tired of the fighting, and the grinding poverty, enough to change course.

Level, history has shown that if they try to buck thier leaders they get slaughtered, Arfat has ordered far more Palestinians killed than the Isrealis.  Hopefully you are right here, but I doubt it.

lucky, they have to risk that, then. It's the only way things will change for them. Peace, and an independent Palastine, are there for the taking. I think, anyway.... [:D]

It was Israel that started the '67 war. It is Israel that daily commits human rights crimes, it is Israel that is breaking international law by annexing occupied territory, stealing land, stealing property, rerouting Palestinian water. It is Israel that has locked up thousands of Palestinians without trial. It is Israel that regularly destroys homes (a collective punishment that is an international crime.) It is Israel that has 500,000 people living on the occupied territories. It is Israel that is still building new houses for new settlers on stolen land. Despite propaganda Israel has never once offered realistic peace proposals. Of course you being American and subject to the bias of the American media on this issue, you probably really believe what you say about the Palestinians. It is sad that people who would probably consider themselves intelligent allow themselves to be spoon fed on lies and believe it is truth just because they see something on TV. Maybe this is the reason why Americans are so hated in the middle east, people like you who are totally and utterly ignorant of the situation are voting for people equally as ignorant and convinced they are right and support regimes that oppress the people there or if you have no influence on a country you threaten them with war.

What a laugh you are, the country that claims to have a head start on being civilized bankrolls a country that regularly commits human rights crimes and breaks international law and then accuses the other side of being terrorists when all they have been after from the start is some justice. Maybe it is not a surprise, the US, that bastion of civiliszation doesn't support any international court or believe in any international jurisdiction because it would interfer with its criminal foreign policies and knows the criminals in the administration would come under international scrutiny.

This is a sop that is so small as to be meaningless. It isn't really a consession, it is just a proposal to stop harrassing Arab citizens of Jerusalem.

ABU DIS, West Bank - The Palestinians are ready to yield parts of the West Bank to Israel if compensated with an equal amount of Israeli territory, the lead Palestinian negotiator told The Associated Press in an interview Wednesday.

Ahmed Qureia, a former prime minister who has dealt with five Israeli prime ministers during 14 years of failed peacemaking, is trying again with No. 6, Ehud Olmert.

And he’s full of optimism, saying the U.S.-hosted Mideast conference in Annapolis, Md., tentatively set for Nov. 26, is a “very, very, very important opportunity.” If it fails, he predicts Israelis and Palestinians will perhaps suffer more than in the blood-soaked years following the unsuccessful Camp David summit in 2000.
