BOSTON - An appeals court cleared the way Friday for a Harvard student to receive extra break time during a lengthy medical licensing exam so she can pump breast milk for her infant daughter. The state Appeals Court refused to overturn a decision issued by a single justice of the court last week allowing Sophie Currier, 33, an extra 60 minutes of break time. Currier is scheduled to take the nine-hour exam over two days next week, but the National Board of Medical Examiners planned to appeal to the state Supreme Judicial Court, said the board's attorney, Joseph Savage Jr. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21150811

the neighbor lady- was told she can not breast feed in public. how dumb! breast milk gives a baby a solid base of nutition and better imune system. most moms can feed discreetly. i view this in the category of spitting gum on the sidewalk. it is illegal- but i still do it.

This is too much. They made a federal case out of PUMPING breast milk ? Fucking do it at home. If you breast feed take the time off and feed the bambino. You can actually breast feed in public in most places now and I don't think that is bad. But we are talking pumping here. Why not just wait until you get home ? T

This woman was already given special consideration by being allowed to take the test over a 2 day period instead of one day, which is the norm. I'm all for the rights of the breast feeding mother, and her child, however, she has already failed the test once and i think this is just a bid for attention and/or possibly the opportunity to cheat. If she needs to use the break time thats already allocated to pump milk than so be it. She should not be allowed extra time. If she can not comply with the same guidelines as everyone else, then she should wait until she is no longer breastfeeding to take the test again.

If you are actively breastfeeding, it is impossible to wait until you get home to pump. The breasts need to be emptied about every four hours. Give or take and hour. If they aren't, you can guarantee that her top will be completely soaked. Breast pads are useless beyond soaking up a few drops. Letdown will soak right through. I can't imagine needing an hour to pump though. With a good electric pump you can pump both breasts at the same time and easily be done within fiteen to twenty minutes...or at least empty enough to make it till the next break.

I don't know how long it should take, but I've spent hours trying to milk slaves, with no avail. probably needed them to be lactating, or at least their hormone levels to be right.

If it meant that much to her, why not wait until the baby no longer needed to be breast fed? Also, why not a breast pump? I hate when exceptions make the rule. Orion

Nice of Term to show just how ignorant he is of breast feeding issues. Since so much of standardized tests is BS to me anyway (and I kick ass on them), I certainly think there's no reason here NOT to give an extension on a break time.

Ha...I forgot about that pain. Then you run the risk of getting an infection from clogged milk ducts. That's lovely because it feels like someone is stabbing your breasts with a knife. They get swollen, red and extremely painful to touch. Plus you have all the symptoms of the flu to boot. Breastfeeding is a huge commitment of time and effort. You have to stick to schedules. If you don't, you feel it in your breasts and you see it in the milk output. This doesn't mean that I agree with the decision to give her extra breaks. I still believe that she should be able to pump in the time given there. Many women pump on their breaks at work all the time, every day without extra consideration or breaks.

No ones talking about her going all day without pumping. It's a 9 hour test, broken down into 2 days, that means 4.5 hours per day, with a standard break within that 4.5 hours. There is nothing stopping her from pumping just prior to going in....during her break...and immediately afterwards if thats what her body dictates. Thats pumping 3 times in a 4.5 hour period.
