My question is why are u asking us?  I have a degree in Management.  There is an art to inducing compliance.
You also have to have some standards of your own as well such as not allowing family  members to work for you.  It just does not work, nor does it work to hire people you know.
You will hate them in the end.

No one ever reads what I say.  I said there was an art to inducing compliance faerielights.  It is not about the degree, it is about the art.
I am working for the best boss I have had in ten years simply because she sets high standards for herself.  We cannot outwork her.

Do one window yourself and see if you are getting value for your money. If not, do the rest yourself.

I dont understand "management by crises/emergency"  my past few managers were" we need you- it is an emergency"  ok- but the emergency never ends. thus good workers burn out. [work hard-play hard]

the bad news about this is- being that every day is an emergency- it gets harder to determine what is an actual workplace emergency.

i dont know if this is workers fed up with poor treatment. or the books now say crises mode works.  in the short run- yes- it works- but over the long haul -it does NOT work.

I can tell you how I feel pahunkboy.  Although I have a degree in management, I am not a manager.
I have been close, but my health has kept me from taking on more stress, and that is what management is, stress.
As an employee, I am fed up with not having job security any longer.  Why work hard for something that will move away to another location or go unde?   It is sad, but that is how I really feel.
I love my job now, but I make less than I have ever made in my life.  I am staying their because I can do that and help with my elderly mother.
I wish you the best.  There is no easy answer, and you just have to get in their and straighten his ass out.

I read somewhere that the decline in American manufacture has been  proportional to the increase in the number of  management grads.

For the non mathematical
more management grads = less manufacturing output.

MissS,  some jobs- "manager" is a fancy way that says you will work when no worker can be found- at salary not hourly wage.  So the title is misleading.

I can relate to your distress.  I thought I was one of few slackers who as one job ad states "no job hoppers".  well- as I heard more - moving around is more commen then 30 years punching the same clock.

Being happy at what you do is important. I loved the one job I had- at a gas station in the middle of a pasteur off of i80.  we had few customers- the ones we had were tourists. often i was the 1st and only person they would talk to one on one  in the state. so i was what Pennsylvania was/is. A good many stayed and chatted- a sort of counselling and or commaradadee.  I met sound profound people. Gang bangers tht had just stolen a car- to diplomats on their way to Washington. Tim McViegh passed thru my gas station.  bikers- rock bands- you name it.

Alot of the time I could spend as much time as requested-

So what happened? the clean water act happened thats what. that required that all gas stations replace their underground tanks. I did not take it with out a fight. I ordered a copy of the legislation wich was as thick as a text book. I read thru all of it to find the loop hole.  no luck.  due to low volumn sales the investorse demanded the gas station be closed down. it was a sad day. i waited on the very last customer. i phoned my co-workers to tell them it was final.i did not really have a chance to say good bye.   Now that pollution laws are weakened-- it might have stayed.....

i made the mistake of hiring someone locally to paint my house. he said he would paint 1/2 on one weekend then finish the next weekend. I was supplying all materials, he was supplying his own ladder, brushes, etc.  He asked for half of the $ up front, which I did. He then brought a broken ladder, painted two exterior windows with no prep (painted over the old peeling paint and didn't even open the can of primer I had provided) then disappeared for 3 days and didn't return my calls.  Then he got upset when I stopped payment on the check! I told him I didn't need his help, he wasn't doing what he said he would, and I am doing it myself and much more satisfied with the results.  This guy was recommended to me by my boss. Hmmmm.
