KABKABIYA, Sudan - Former President Carter got in a shouting match Wednesday with Sudanese security services who blocked him from a town in Darfur where he was trying to meet with refugees from the ongoing conflict.

The 83-year-old Carter walked into this highly volatile pro-Sudanese government town to meet refugees too frightened to attend a scheduled meeting at a nearby compound. He was able to make it to a school where he met with one tribal representative and was preparing to go further into the town when Sudanese security officers stopped him.

Good for him...... we could do with a few more shouting matches involving elder politicos and oppressive military forces. Pakistan, Burma, Zimbabwe come to mind.

you know, it's nice to see someone give a bully what-for.  even if they are a former president.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for Mr. Carter.  He wasn't the greatest president, but he has always proved himself as a man who lives up to his own ideals.

I just heard about this from npr. An interviewed witness said that it was moreover a case of misunderstanding and miscommunication as the security agent was just following orders to stick with the planned tour and schedule for Carter and his posse. Something about tribal leaders...
The witness wasn't sure whether or not the agent even knew who Carter was or of the significance of his presence in Darfur.
I thought it was interesting that while visiting, Carter was slipped several notes detailing horrific crimes from the victims/refugees.

Love,
GM

Gee, too bad we couldn't get him to start shouting about what's going on in the U.S. instead of some foreign country.
There's plenty that needs to be done in the U.S.
What the hell was he doing in Sudan anyway?

I have a great deal of respect for both the former President and Mrs. Carter for their humanitarian
work in the U.S. and abroad.

Carter, now there was a leader. Too bad we were too immature as a society to appreciate him.

Yeah, I liked his brother Billy stopping the limosine with Libyan govt. officials in it with him to have a "piss call" on the side of a building.
I don't think Carter was cut out to be President.
He was just too indecisive.

Billy was cool, he was an early version of Larry the Cable Guy. I wonder how much cash Billy made off of his name with the beer. In middle school I built a Billy Carter pickup truck in model building class. It even came with fake cases of beer in the back of the truck.
