ORIGINAL: toservez The problem depends on what you are talking about. Everyone has hot button issues and if someone hit yours with wording that is judgmental and totally a gross generalization or clearly pointing out their own preference or opinion I am betting a lot your response would be worded significantly different. I would not argue this country is way too politically correct but my view of this thread is just a more intelligent conversation of some people not accepting that the medium of written communication is vastly different then talking to a person face to face. Certain things are just done to try to communicate the meaning and tone of one’s words. Spoken language is full of complexities and visual and tone clues to pick up the true meaning of the words spoken. Written words require extra words to try to equal that level. It is this attempt that people use the “extra” words. Many just like to make sure what they are trying to communicate is an accurate representation with minimal distortion and has nothing to do with political correctness. I totally agree with you - it is vastly different, and woefully inferior to face to face speech in terms of breadth and depth of communication. But, that also gives it a different purpose. It is written communication. I am not keen of trying to make it into speech. Get better at writing. The fact is human beings are social creatures, and if you are spending your time not interacting with face to face communication then the internet is not going to make your life complete. Surely clarity with the written word is best achieved using correct spelling (ie the words mean different things if they are spelt differently) good grammar, punctuation, elegance and wide vocabulary; isnt that preferable to trotting out cliched phrases, which actually communicate a very stunted and sterile "McVerbiage". Personally I have had enough of the bar being lowered constantly and I am all for raising the bar, having a gold standard and valueing excellence. Oh, and there are too many people cluttering up the planet for me to be concerned with some "equality" diatribe.
