A question mostly for the folks who have a LOT of gear... how do you set it all up so that it's easy to find and readily available?

We've got a dedicated playroom, which is a big plus.

Decorative iron racks on the walls (Pier 1)- 6 hooks apiece, 4 racks. Two are dedicated to hanging whips/crops/other long CP implements, two are dedicated to restraints. Works well, except that almost all of the whips are doubled up, and a lot of the restraints just don't hang well- sticking the hook through the O-rings or buckles on cuffs makes them stand way out from the wall, and attaching a carabiner to the buckle and hanging them from that doesn't always solve the problem.

Computer armoire (K-Mart)- Doors have cup hooks set in them to hang light slappers and stingers. Pull-out keyboard drawer holds the heavy paddles. Stereo for playroom (5-disc changer) is set up in the monitor area. Pull-out drawer for cleansing stuff. Shelves hold rope, chains, plastic wrap and tape, and 5-drawer plastic organizers with electrical toys. TENS is in printer area along with my Relaxacizor
On top of armoire- hoods (running out of space!), speakers from stereo.

Old buffet/cabinet (Craigslist)- Top drawer, lube, condoms, scissors, paper towels, rubbing alcohol, lighters and matches
Second drawer- silverware organizer- binder clips and other specialty clamps, locks, carabiners, pokey sticks, weights, hot ointments
Third drawer- Clothespins (need another divider or tupperware bucket- i don't have THAT many clothespins)
Fourth drawer- insertables
Left side cabinet (3 shelves)- Ace bandages, vacuum toys
Right side cabinet (3 shelves)- needles, needle play accessories (string, ribbon, jalepenos, etc), medical toys

Over-door organizer (6 racks)- more Ace bandages (bought a case of 40 on ebay... they take up space!), rabbit furs, CBT devices, oddball gags,

On floor- canes and long crops waiting for me to get around to building a rack for them.

Standing in corner- stocks, spreader bars

Closet- play-specific outfits, shoes, wax play candles (the big glass religious candles... can't lay them down or they'll actually ooze out!), tarp for wax play, crock pot for wax, straightjacket, sleepsack, cupping set, raw materials for projects, cervical collars and gas masks that take up too much space.

Whew!

i've been instructed to take inventory and organize things...

i think my biggest issue is restraints- leather and steel cuffs of various sorts, collars, armbinders, mittens... they're just not space-efficient hanging on the wall racks [:-]

How do you keep things organized?

Cheers,

...dave

Wish I had enough toys to organize! lol. you could install a board to the wall with hooks to put the restraints on.

LadyPact -> RE: Keeping your toys organized! (playroom layout) (10/3/2007 6:46:48 AM)

Dave, this is an excellent question and I am very much looking forward to seeing some of the responses.  I'll be particularly looking for some things from those who have a lot of gear AND don't have the play space that you do, or participate often in public play.

At this time, I don't have the best system on the planet.  One of My boys duties is to set up the room and toys before play time.  This can be a royal pain if there are no hooks available and/or places to lay things out is a bit limited.  (Take My word on this.  W/we travel with two rather large toy bags.)

The best thing I've seen going for quick set up/easy access when playing away from home is a little contraption that an aquaintance of Mine came up with.  The bottom half is a tripod (for good height) and the top half of it is a seat from a barstool type seat.  Attatched to the bottom half of the stool are hooks to hang floggers.  I've never asked him how many he can hang from it, but I'm sure the capacity hits the two dozen mark.  This little device is portable and sets up very quickly.

Also, I've seen folks who will use a trunk and just put hooks in that will hang toys neatly when stood upright.  That isn't a bad idea either.

I bought a folding rack for a laundry room that is on wheels and using shower curtain hooks I hang things from them.. it also has a shelf that I can lay things on .. this can be rolled around the room as I need it .. can be rolled into a closet if I need it hid .... is portable for going to play parties ..and holds an amazing amount of toys that can be hung .. includeing cuffs etc.

I use a decorative umbrella stand to hold canes etc ...

Just creating a little Dungeon here in Our new shed ... have cross, subby/Queening seat, bondage bed and spanking bench set up. Definitely need hooks on the wall to hang floggers, crops, paddles etc, at the moment they are draped over things. Have an old dresser with 3 large drawers which I use for the bulkier items such as rope, harnesses, insertables, blindfolds, cuffs, plastic wrap etc. On top of the dresser are candles and accessories, a bowl of clothespegs, Whartenburg wheel and little impact items such as wooden spoon, hair brushes, feather duster etc. For travelling to parties, I bought a tiered tool box, the sort that unlocks and concertinas backwards on both sides when opened to reveal a deep inner cavity and lots of little divided shelves. I store lots of little stuff in there permanently - nipple clamps, other small sensation items, a couple of small vibes and cleaner, gloves, condoms, lengths of chain, clips. To go to a party I can quickly add pegs, wheel, candle, brush and matches, My favourite flogger fits neatly in the bottom as does My small paddle or a hair brush, blindfold etc. Then I just need a long bag for any longer items, rope, harness, cuffs (although someone is likely to be wearing the latter items).

Now all I need is to finally unpack the remaining cardboard boxes that are lining the walls and hiding under cloths ... problem is, I've no idea where I'm going to fit the contents in the house! But I could use the extra space in the Dungeon, especially now We've put up hessian curtains to separate it from the rest of the shed where Master's big and little cars live! But hey, We've only been here 7 months ... plenty of time! Interesting thread though!

I usually keep my toys in  a fold up garment bag, as I am working to convert a bedroom (which is actually being used as my office) in my apartment into a mini-dungeon. And in a way, it helps a great deal when I visit a dungeon at my friend's home each time he and his slave host a play party to say nothing of keeping nosy neighbors or landlords from spying.

KnightofMists -> RE: Keeping your toys organized! (playroom layout) (10/3/2007 6:28:51 PM)

well... right now I am in transistion.  I moved recently from one house to another.  So.. all my toys is packed in six locked boxes that are about 4x2x2 feet.  This doesn't even count the furniture (a truck load and then some) that is stored in Rob and Denika's garage.  It is amazing what a person can fit into room when one has the mind too.

Now I have a new room to create.  It' a bigger space that before... so I am already going to be adding.  I love things to hanging on the walls.  A full wall of floggers... another way of canes and crops.  then their is another wall for restraints, of various stuff.  Of course there is the shelf here and there that hold my small kits.  the clothespin box.. candle box... cutting box... needle box...  Dildo box.... first aid kit... tool box.... and god can't remember what else.  Alandra spent more than a few hours putting an inventory list for each box.

When I finish putting together this new dungeon... maybe I will let you know how it comes together...

I always need more toys.. and to the op, how about an armoir with drawers and then partition the drawers with spacers for the restraints? The larger open space can easily be utilized by the sound of your post.

And my paultry little toychest is a plastic toolbox, which is kept right next to the bed.

Heh, i actually like organizing things, i just wish i had more time to get things done ("utter chaos" doesn't even begin to describe my computer desk)

i kinda like the pegboard idea... i know that i've seen steel pegboard around somewhere... with a little "weathering" it could look pretty nice, and have the benefit of being reconfigurable as needed. Hmm... off to Garage Journal [:-]

i'm trying to avoid getting into any more drawers for the sake of keeping the majority of bigger items immediately visible... My wife hates having to hunt for stuff. On the other hand, i'm trying to leave some wall space free because the room isn't that-that big, and i still need to set up a suspension frame for my electric hoist (no access to the rafters... suck [&:]), and that's going to tear up a ton of space.

Since we play outside the house once, maybe twice in a busy year, there are really no provisions for keeping things organized when we travel... it's stuff as much gear as possible into a convenient suitcase, then lay it out on the bed when we get there. A well-built, old-school steamer trunk would be cool as hell if i could find one, though! i can definitely see the value in having a travelling rig that remains just as functional when it's back at home.

Well we at the office have found that we like sturdy plastic garage shelving with different sterilite or rubbermaid bins for everything. Although, as a leather retailer it works well, I'd imagine it would work well in a playspace as well. When new items come in they get individually bagged in zip-locs, labeled, and placed into the appropriate bin. So ankle cuffs go in the ankle cuffs bin which is on the shelf along with wrist cuffs, collars, posture collars, and other types of restraints. CBT toys get divided into either zip-locs or smaller gladware containers and stacked on the appropriate shelves. Floggers, paddles, canes, get hung on a metal grid for retail applications.

MistressHolly71 -> RE: Keeping your toys organized! (playroom layout) (10/3/2007 8:09:29 PM)

Must be nice to have enough room to have a dedicated playroom. I keep my favorites in a duffle bag so I can grab them easily if I'm going somewhere.

LadyHugs -> RE: Keeping your toys organized! (playroom layout) (10/3/2007 9:26:42 PM)

Dear petdave, Ladies and Gentlemen;

I can only speak for my organizational tastes however, I do not mix my groups.  I put all impact toys together, bondage together and sex toys together.  Your inventory is very pleasant.

I have used belt/tie racks as my flogger holders and I have paddles with loops on them as well.  Those paddles without handles that have the handles to support hanging, you could use heavy rubberbands to loop and hang on hooks.  I do like to keep my impact tools, e.g. floggers, canes, paddles, quirts, whips, cat-o-nines, flails, single tails away from any walls, drawer spaces and such.  This is for sanitary reasons.  Mold-mildew issues brew when moist from human fluid and or cleaning, circulating air is best.  Resting on/against surfaces leather and some undressed rattan, reed and or wood groups will draw moisture.  Solid paddles won't breath on a solid surface, thus wipe down of anti-bacterial and hanging them free makes me feel more comfortable.  I solve the hanging like a hanger issue as to turn it as a display and access to all 'frontal' access' by hanging the tie/belt hanger on a looped chain, leather and or rope.  If an opposite problem I hang a rope on the bar with a machine circle/loop (found in chain section of Home Depot/Lowes) hang where it is facing where you wish it--not all hangers have moving 'hook' ends.

I see there is no "First Aid" station or 'cleaning station.'  Flashlights are a good idea to have handy, especially in a power outage or a blown fuse.  Glow sticks could be used as to mark where emergency kit and or flashlights are.  Shake and click on flashlights sold these days will not leave you guessing if you have battery life or not--self made power is a good idea for flashlights.  Fire extinguishers and or blankets to put fire out won't be a bad idea as well.  The 'drop and roll' etc.

For hanging restraints up, I use a slip knot.  Pull one end and the knot is un-done and your restraints fall into your hands quickly.  May want to consider using a length of chain and double end snap the cuffs to the chain, so it will look much like a row of cuffs.  Small on top and bigger to the bottom.  You can put a color tag as to denote the sizes as to devide them.  These chains could hook to the false ceiling support beams and or be hooked to the pillars in your dungeon and hung to the height adjustment you prefer by just adusting the chain.  Then double end snap or however you  may wish to affix it.

I personally prefer keeping bulky furniture out of the dungeon, when it's use is only for supplies and not for dungeon use.  I would put the items in a clear plastic tub you can find at Staples for $19.00.  You can see your miles of rope, the clips and such.  I would then make racks for them.  Cinderblocks and boards work great for people on a budget.  You can always wrap cinderblocks in wrapping paper--silver foil for example to keep it tidy.  Old twin sheets can be wrapped around the boards.  When dirty--just wash.

I have enjoyed using two different types of clothes racks, that are on sale in most 'houseware' stores-- that are on rollers/wheels which instantly transport your tools/toys about to the stations you may be working with.  The single bar rack, you could create a wide seat swing as to lay things on, in addition to hanging floggers, whips and things from the bar using chains to have the hangers side by side.  Your impact tools can be hung neatly and grabbed as you wish.  My preferences are left to right; left light and all the way right would be heavy duty whips.  I do the same with canes by diameter and length.  (Yes, looks like chimes).  I hang my paddles the same way.  The fold out into an X rack gives you double space to hang things and easy to put into the closet when done.

Because I teach a lot, give presentations--I mark my floggers what kind of leather it is.  I have 13 different kinds of floggers alone but, it gives people a "Whitman's Sampler" per se of choices and feel for themselves what might work best for them.  I do this with quirts, canes, paddles, flails, horse whips/crops/bats and single tails.  If I have an assistant and ask for a particular flogger--they will see the label.  I prefer my whips not to touch each other, as not to contaminate one another.

As far as rope goes.  I like hanging my rope and quick to use.  It is pretty to put it into a nice bulky good looking design.  However, I like rope to be 'in air.'  Much like a Western Cowboy, I have my rope in circle form when in dungeons.  I take a short bit of rope to 'tie' the rope in a slip knot and the tie rope is hooked by a double end snap to either chain or rope.  For rope application, to 'stack' my rope--I take pencil or chop sticks, as skewer sticks are too flimsy, I then do a standard knot (like tying shoe) and stick the pencil/chop stick in the middle of the knot.  This way when weight is on the knot the chop stick/pencil will keep it from being impossible to unknot it but, it acts like a 'T' to hang the rope from the arms and easy to access.  If you use the tie rope, you can put a O ring in the knot and hang from these rings.  The "D" ring works well also.    I also find tagging the ends of the rope by dipping them in dye, I can tell what length of rope I have.  Sometimes short rope is desired but, long lengths are all you can find at a moment's inspiration.  So, I have different lengths in pairs as to create many different things.  I also have the same system for chain, as I prefer chain bondage over rope.  Locks are left unlocked and open and hang in the open spaces of the chain.

For some dungeon spaces, they come carpeted already.  I have taken tile, or tongue and grove tiles you can find and lay it down for any wax, fire and or messy play.  I also have it as close to the door as possible but, not as to block it in an emergency.  Laying down plastic is great for clean up but, it also can errupt into flames fast--enveloping a person on a table in flames.  This is why I prefer tile.

Whip zones are very important to me.  I make sure there is a lot of space where I throw whips and make sure the ceiling is covered as not to snag on pipes, heating duct, lights, etc.  I also make sure hooks, nails, sharp things are not in any zone area from head to thigh level.  Should someone fall or in bondage collapse, I do not wish them to have an injury.  So, anywhere thrashing bodies may be--I get the sharps away.

Knives.  I find old knife blocks from kitchens great.  One could make their own. Knives are ready to use and the business of pulling them out of their sheaths is bypassed.

Blood scenes.  I know blood flies in the most tiny specks.  I do hang a shower curtain in these areas.  They make clear so your audience/guests can see.  I prefer in a tile area and use items that can be sterilized and or replaced.  If there are 'dedicated' tools/toys--I let these folks have a rack all their own but, I do not share racks--again cross contamination issues.

Just some thoughts.

Lady Hugs

LadyHugs -> RE: Keeping your toys organized! (playroom layout) (10/3/2007 9:41:37 PM)

Dear Lady Pack, Ladies and Gentlemen;

I travel a lot with five large gym bags stuffed with approximately 50 lbs of gear in each.  The fifth is a long box with canes, whips and such--what I call my fragiles.

I have found a cart, the ones for luggage but not forcing you to just use luggage on rollers but, something to stack on a platform, e.g Target two wheel cart that folds out and a handle swings up and lock or, the Staple's Cart, a larger version works well. When handle is up, you can wrap a bit of chain over the handle, hook two belt/tie hangers (looks like a rake with a hanger hook) and can put floggers on the 'fingers' of the hanger or between the fingers to hold the end of the flogger.  Some floggers have loops--some do not.  If not, take a heavy thick rubberband and loop it as to make a hanger loop for it--easy on and off.

Folding camp stools are rather sweet-- can take a tray and you have a mini table.  Two step ladders and a broom stick can make a large rack quickly.  Step stools or collapse type saw horses you can affix rod or boards to make a table.  Cover with cloth or work out of your bag, at least it is height friendly.

Just some thoughts.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,
Lady Hugs

LadyHugs -> RE: Keeping your toys organized! (playroom layout) (10/3/2007 10:02:43 PM)

Dear petdave, Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have a steamer trunk and a gentleman's valet trunk--believe me, they will give you back troubles and stretch your arms as to drag your knuckles on the floor. LOL

I find that Ziplock makes wonderful heavy duty bags that hold bulk.  You have handles built right in and you can see right through.  Dividing your gear, you can pack and pull neatly what you seek from the gym bag and or your luggage.  Have you looked at plastic toy chests for kids?  There are also other storage boxes for patios for sale that are plastic.

One can use nylon webbing and have your shoe repair person sew strongly at the edge 'D' rings.  Then you can use these nylon web sections top and bottom of most doors.  If you have rope you can then make it taunt as to make it secure and have a 'rack will travel.'

Self standing racks, may want to look at hammock racks for decks and lawns.  A good plastic pipe assembly into a well formed block could give you means of self supporting rack and higher you can create a swing/rack, etc.  In the old days before premade racks, I used horse stall guards as a mini-hammock and the fun was had.  Plastic pipe wasn't around then so standard pipes were used.  I would peek into some bondage furniture sites, as I believe some are stainless steel and light.  Some are take down and easy reassemble.

I have used a bunk bed as a bondage island.  Gave me four stations, slide panels gave me bondage variety, if you can picture bedroom sliding doors but use heavier channel angle iron, then peg into place.  Edge of the bondage island I had chain bolted in the entire frame.  One can do standard bondage -4 point bondage or, can make it a roped spiderweb using all the loops in the chain anchored to the entire frame.  Panels can make this bunk bed into a huge 'cage'; remove them all and hang a door converted into a rack and or bench...swing and hang from inside the bunkbed which is deigned for weight movement shifts already.  It can be put against the wall and still have two stations.  In center, no whip zones will cross as it is like a hub and whip work flares out like spokes.  Your wench should be rather easy to mount inside the frame with extra added support on the frame.

Blanket racks might make nice hangers for gear as well.  Some fold up and some do not.

Just some thoughts.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,
Lady Hugs

Not that we have a huge amount of toys or a playroom, but ...

We have a large padlocked antique metal trunk in the corner of a room which holds most of the toys. Sir has made a wooden platform with wheels and the trunk sits on that - makes it really easy to wheel it into whichever room we are in. Within the trunk itself - the toys are sorted and stored in mesh laundry bags which makes it easy to find stuff.

Great thread :)

InkedMaster -> RE: Keeping your toys organized! (playroom layout) (10/4/2007 12:40:21 AM)

Currently, no dedicated playroom, but I do love Pier1 imports for thier unique wall mounted hooks and sconces. In the bedroom one wall has 3 triple wall mounted hooks used for the floggers, crops, paddles and spreader bars, the custom built version of the Cross I made is centered on another wall with individual hooks next to it used for holding panic snaps, quick links, chain and straps. 2, 5 shelf open bookcases on either side hold knives, rope, cupping equipment, clamps and weights along with sex toys. Then 2 decorative hat boxes, large and a small for other misc items we use quite often, 1 sits on a shelf, the other on the floor next to the cross. More storage in the walk-in closet via 2 plastic four drawer cabinets. Storage and display of the most often used items is not a problem, I like to look for just unique ways, something different, playspace is at a premium, but we manage. Now when we build our home, there will be a dedicated playroom.
